Remote door lock question

Is it possible for my 1999 Alero to NOT have this option on it? I just bought the car used, and the salesman said he got no remote with it and I could just go to the dealer and get one. I understand that I may need the dealer to program it, but is it possible that the system isn't even in my car?? I do have power door locks, window, door mirrors, and power seat (only the up and down version though) along with A/C, cruise, and the V6. ANy help will be appreciatted.

Look at either the service parts identification label on the underside of the spare tire carrier for option code AU0, or look for the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver clipped into the rear deck near the passenger side speaker. (it clips in from the top, but you should be able to see part of it)

I have the same thing on our 99. I have the AU0 code with the spare. You can actually find the receiver in the trunk next to the light. If you pop the light out you can actually pull the received down and out.

I picked up two remotes on eBay inexpensively, but Have had NO LUCK finding programming instruction. I even bought (and returned) a few that claimed to work on 99's. They don't! From what I understand the dealer has a Tech2 OBDII scanner/programmer unit that actually does the programing. No one else seems to be able to do it.

I'm sure there is another ay to program it. i just haven't lucked into it yet :(

Oh the dealer here quoted me $45 to program. Maybe one day I'll actually have enough time to drop it off for the day for a 5 minute job.

Gotta be prog'd by someone with that tool. There is no way to program it without it in our cars.

Well, don't this just blow Buffalo farts! It would appear that I don't have this option on my vehicle.

Question though, could I just get this receiver from a wrecker or the dealer, and clip it in, then get it programmed with the transmitter I just bought? Is the wiring there, just needs the control module?

Easy enough to pull the light and look to see if the wires are there for it. I would think so, but sometimes I don't think so well :(

If you have the harness there, you can just plug in the RCDLR. It only has 3 wires anyways. However there may be differences in wiring for your car versus one with keyless entry. I know in mine, i lack the circuitry to unlock the drivers door only with the remote. And i do not have the wiring to the back for the receiver. You may also need the keyless entry option programmed in your BCM. I think there's two different receivers, one for '99-00 and the other for '01-04.

Well, my local wreckers has no 99 Alero, they did have a 2000 Alero, but alas no remote door locks.

Now, my question is this:

WIll the rcvr from another year Alero work in my 99? as well, would the rcvr from a different model work in my '99 Alero? The dealer wants $300.00 for a new rcvr! For that price, (actually alot less) I'll just get a remote car starter with power door lock feature!!

I think it has to be '99 or '00. It can be from a Grand Am as well, and possibly a Malibu or Cutlass. Your dealer should be able to give you a year/model range for that given part number.

You can get the receiver from other models too. Surf the net. Occasionally you will see a package on eBay. Receiver and two remotes all ready programmed. It's like $100 plus shipping. I would have gone that route but I already have two remotes.

dont think they're already programmed, do to the fact that there are thousands of different codes. if that were the case, that means one remote will work for all cars.

I think he meant that if you get the remotes AND the receiver as a kit, the kit comes already programmed.

I have actually had luck with the Holding unlock while inserting and reinserting the key 3 times and releasing on a 2000 GL2 Alero sedan w/o using the tool.

Well, I got the rcvr and two transmitters from a guy on this forum. Unfortunately, since my car never came with the option from the factory, the wiring for the transceiver isn't there!! Looks like my only option now is a car starter with the remote door unlock option.

You're going to be acting like a dog chasing it's own tail here. You'll keep running in circles getting no where, quickly, and though you might actually catch the tail, it would have been easier to lay down and reach over to your tail, to "cathc it".

What I mean is, forget this OEM remote keyless bit, it will end up (in most cases) being cheaper to go aftermarket, plus you can also choose if you want more than just keyless entry to have a remote starter or security, or as I prefer both. You can even get these systems with two-way communication, so that you know what's going on with the car, when you start it, or if someone tries to break in.

The 3rd (Class2) wire for the RKE Receiver is installed in the left IP Junction Block (fuse box) connector C3 pin A5 and is routed to the rear of the car straight to the RKE module. If you wanted to do it the easy way out, you could always splice into Pin #2 (PPL) of the DLC.
