View Full Version : Turbo in the final stretch.....

Well, I got my headers, crossover and downpipe installed for test fit, and looks like germ knows his shit. Very minimal (but expected) modification needed for the install.

1) had to push the A/C line (coming out of the compressor) forwards toward the radiator a tad to get it away from the #2 head pipe.
2) will have to cut the corner out of the heater hose hardline and route it over the top of the thermostat housing
3) oil dipstick had to be moved outward a little for the flange.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j202/qaddamage/germ/DSCF0020.jpg

4) need to remove the transmission filler cap and replace with a smaller brass plug because the crossover actually touches it. Small thing to deal with considering the benefit.
5) relocate the transmission shift cable bracket.
6) extend the O2 sensor wiring.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j202/qaddamage/germ/DSCF0017.jpg

All said and done, very minimal modifications considering germ didn't even have the car there for him to design it all. I did send a heck of alot of measurements to him though :D

Once all the minor mods are completed, all that's left is BOV/wastegate flanges, coating/heat wrap/heat shields and we're ready to start tuning. More pics can be posted on request.

A Question everyone is dying to know, How much did it run you?

Hack job...hahahah....no way. If it were, I'd say it's one of the better "hack jobs" I've seen. Credit goes to germ of Donkey Punch Performance for the nice fab work. It's not meant to be pretty, it's all business. However, once I get it dialed in the way I want it, I'll probably start putting in nicer looking components and doing some external polishing on some of the stuff. Speed first, always!

How much did it run me? I'll let you know when I'm done spending :p
(but so far I'm into it all with heads, intakes, TB, MAF, PowrTuner and turbo components for under what most people spend for just a turbo kit or S/C)

Just remember that if you replace that trans cap with a plug that you might need to add a vent somewhere. I believe that cap acts as a vent as well. But it looks great! seems like it should be tearin' up the streets fairly soon!

Im jealous... just give me everything in your engine bay and id be a happy happy man!

Are Turbo's on the 2.4's worth while or are they just alot of headaches and problems? Cause this is something id really like to get. But if its not worth while then ill lookin to gettin a 3400 first

Of course they're worth it, if you have the money.

Can't wait to see how it runs. :)

That's a good point. Sounds like I need to put in an elbow fitting and some braided line to a breather. I'll add that to the list.

there is a turbo kit for the 2.4L engine, but like all boost applications on any factory-NA car, there's bound to be some issues.

stock internals on the 2.4L can handle boost up to 220 crank hp (from what I understand). so it would be worth the time and effort to work on it, but would it be worth the money is completely up to you. IMO, it's not worth it on a 4-banger.

Very good job BlackJack. I'm looking forward to seeing some numbers (dyno charts, track slips, etc)

Dam dude! what are you gonna do about the gearing situation we were discussing?4t65e-hd w/1" single chain upgrade and 3.69 gearing. I decided not to waste any money on that 4t45 I had lined up (already built) since I know it's not going to hold up for the final boost levels. That 3.69 will also give me more torque off the line since I already am going to be losing a little from dropped compression.

Check my sig for the links on "The Fun" to get caught up...I think this has been going on for quite some time ;)

As far as it being my daily driver....my wife and I went ahead and put the car in a "downed" status and I'm taking hers to work for now, so I can finish everything out on it without repeatedly assembling/disassembling. This might allow me to complete it a little faster. Still looking at mid-end October before its ready to rip.

she said her 4.3 Vortec in the GMC Safari is next....but she wants a little heavier on the NOS. We're guessing maybe a smaller turbo on hers with a 100-shot that way she can cut off those rude moms picking up the kids in front of school, and being late getting the kids to the game on saturday shouldn't be a problem. lol

I thought you were all gungho about the 45? oh well things change, just like me not doing a twincharged setup anymore and only a supercharger/nitrous combo.........so anyways, what else are you including in your 65hd setup.........i would start trying to get your hands on a quaife LSD if I were you, i am working on that part for sure.........anything else though, hardened output shaft maybe? also what compression are you going to be running. I am contemplating getting some domed pistons to try to drop my ratio a little lower than the 9.0:1 ratio right now.......

I think the whole point of that is a 2.4 GM is quite pricey to build up that kind of HP by comparison to the other cars you mentioned, b-spot. The ones you listed are more modern "tuner" oriented 4-bangers that are built quite a bit heavier out of the box than the old 2.4 GM.

Now I happen to have a "warmed over" SRT-4 owner that works with me. He's not very enthusiastic about this build and how little money is tied up in my car vs. what he paid for his plus upgrades. We have sort of a little friendly competition happening in the upcoming months. I'll let you know later on how that goes. I told him he's not being targeted though, I'm gunning for faster cars than neons:p

Thanks man. I'd love to start hanging out again bro, but I just dont have time on the weekends for the meets right now. As you can see, I'm spending alot of my time getting this thing finished. Soon as we clear up that little matter from earlier and get that dagger out of my back, we can start working up that 2.4 and get you rolling!

j/k I know they have some quality...but performance? HA!

That's essentially like saying you won't build an Ecotec for performance. The Saab version is the 2nd highest output Ecotec produced (if i remember right). Not to mention the car itself is the same (epsilon) as a Malibu/G6/Aura/Vectra/BLS.

If i ever had to look for a new engine for my Alero, I'd definitely be shopping for Saab parts.

BlackJack
09-27-2006, 12:57 PM
not trying to get off topic from my own thread, but my wife want's to someday get a Saturn Sky, but I'm trying to talk her into the Opel GT instead. Same car, better lines/trim IMO.

Cliff8928
09-28-2006, 03:12 AM
The Opel GT and Saturn sky are nearly identical. only VERY minor differences, unlike the Solstice.

To stay on topic a little bit, to get the same HP/Litre of a GT/ Sky Redline, your 3400 would have to put out 442 HP (how OLDS is that?!?)

Also, there are plenty of people with fast Saabs (and volvos too). Just search on YouTube, etc...

even though we lost Olds to Saturn, the sky is the better looking one of the 3

cliff..lol...sometimes you are too smart for your own good..lol

speaking of saabs and volvos, there are quite a few 500 hp and up of each i have read, and watched on video

we had a 99 S70 AWD turbo...very nice, and FLAT torque curve, however all 99 up volvos have fly-by-wire, and up until recently they have had to extend warranties until 200,000 miles to fix these messed up throttle bodies.....S60R and V70R are badass

Not much further....trying to find a welding shop around here that doesn't try and rip your head off is quite a task.

Finally dropped off the oil pan today to get the drain line bung welded in, and tomorrow I go to the exhaust shop to have the downpipe welded up. Other than that, I still need to coat everything and wrap, then some custom shielding. Close, but just far enough away to be frustrated :)
