See if you can find tint laws on your state.
Also you cannot get a ticket in another state for tint. For example, my tint is illegal in NJ, but since I'm not a resident of NJ, I can't get a ticket.

i get stopped in PA at LEAST once every time i go up there...they are becoming real asses about it...then they come up and see my NC plate and give me the 3rd degree about what i'm doing there.

20% is illegal here in Fl, if you dont want it too dark, then dont go 20, ive got 28% on my nissan, and its not horribly dark, but enough to see at night and suite my needs

Just a short little jaunt to google and I found this
Iowa Window Tint Law
Iowa Tint Law Enacted: 1983
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN IOWA?
http://www.tintcenter.com/img/clear.gif
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Iowa, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
http://www.tintcenter.com/img/clear.gif WindshieldNon-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line. Front Side WindowsMust allow more than 70% of light in.Back Side WindowsAny darkness can be used.Rear WindowAny darkness can be used.
So with the 2 door, you could go 5% in the back if you really wanted and maybe 40 on the front, however it is going to make the front look darker. Mine is 35 the whole way around (well 32 says the cop in va), but its dark enough to block out the light and cars lights from behind, but not dark enough to get me in much trouble...except in pa

I have 15% all around, which is illegal in PA on the driver's and pass windows, got stopped once right after I got it done. If I get stopped again, I'm getting it redone to 30% on the fronts (Legal)
what color is your interior? Darker interior shoow the tint as darker. My ex's Cavailer was black with black interior and it looked so much darker than the Alero with the same tint

don't do it yourself. it will look like crap. get it done by a pro. i did and got a lift time warranty on it too.

Yea dont do it yourself, u need to know what your doing.... u need to clean the windows, then u need to put some water or somethin on the window and put the sheet of tint on there, and then get all the water out from under the tint, it needs to be done by a pro. and if u dont want it too dark go with 35%, the legal limit in NY is 70%lol i have 35% all around and 15% on the back, i want to get 15% all around though.

so even if your state is illegal but you go to another state and it's illegal there they cant give you a ticket?
i usually just try and roll down my front windows if i see a cop when i'm in the suburbs/state police, chicago cops could care less

yeah from what i've found out, your driving has to meet their specifications, but your car needs to be legal in your home state...

i have 15% all the way around and at night it can sometimes be hard to see but in the day time they are great. i would go with at least 20% if you don't want it too dark.

Doing it yourself is fun, even if it doesn't look as good. If you're up to it try it.

10-03-2006, 04:37 PM
it all depends on the cop. minnesota legal is 50% and i got a ticket for 42% even though there is a sticker on the window that says 50%. Only reason i didnt fight it or go back to the shop is that the previous owner had it tinted.

You can tint it yourself but it will look like crap in a while. Just pay to have it done and get 20% or darker or you will kick yourself... If you want any privacy at all get the 15%

I got mine at 35% all around from Ziebart with a 3 year warranty for 225 bucks. be sure you get the 5% strip on your front for the extra charge looking back I wish I would have got it darker at least 20%.

i'm sure you got your tint done already but for anyone else i wouldn't recommend getting a front banner because it seem to attract the cops even more.

I've got a tint related question that I don't really think warrants another thread... so here:
Ok, I've always done do-it-yourself autozone tint, and it's that time to do it again. I've gotten decent at it, so I'm not too worried about that or anything.
however, when I was buying it I saw a bottle of "tint application spray" or something like that, basically to spray on so you can move the tint around then squeegee it out.
I've always used water and shampoo for mine, which works fine, but would this ($4) bottle of specialty spray be any better? Would I just be paying a bunch for something that is basically shampoo and water?

probably the same thing. i'd say just stick with the soap and water if that works.
have you had any problems with the tint changing colors on you because its the cheap stuff from autozone?

My black tint was only in for about 10 months and it stayed the same color through and through.
The red was only in for about 6 and it was fine, too.
If it was in there longer it may have done the fade-to-purple deal that I've heard of, though. 10 months may not be enough for it to happen.

The thing that causes the tint to fade is what most people clean them with.
Don't use windex or other things that may contain ammonia. Products like Eagle one 20/20, Stoners invisable glass and Sprayway glass cleaner are tint safe and won't cause the fading.

i didn't either. i ways thought it was the UV rays of the sun not a chemical reaction that caused that.

I had 20% on my red alero (grey interior) and it looked really good. I got 18% on my MINI, which has dark grey/black interior, and it looks super dark from the outside. I only got hassled about it once, in the Alero.
Definately get it done by a pro though, should be less than $200. Decide if you want to worry about it being illegal, or just get what you like. If you want to keep it legal, keep in mind that the windows are already tinted slightly, so you'll have to go a little lighter than the legal limit to actually comply.

Ive done my own and it looks ok, but if you want it perfect, get a pro to do it. if you are ok with a little trial and error, than do it your self. after all this is what this site is about.. right?
