brake problems...

My friends Alero is having some brake problems. She is describing it as a metal on metal sound coming from the brakes. She also said she's hearing it whether she is braking or not. Well my first guess would be the pads are wore down, but they were replaced along with the rotors about 3500 miles ago. I believe she said they were the regular autozone rotors and pads. She's had noises coming from the brakes since she bought the car...I'll say maybe 15,000 miles ago (at 62,500 now).

So my question to the Alero experts out there...has anyone else experienced this? If so, what kind of pads/rotors were you using? Will a better set of pads help?

In searching the net I've heard a few ppl talk about Aleros OEM pads getting ate up in no time flat. However, no one seems to have a fix for it?

Oh, and it's a 2000 v6. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions! :)

best thing is to get the pads replaced....there is no fix cause the OEM brakes are garbage...everyone on here has experienced that...only option is getting aftermarket brakes, i changed my rotors to powerslot and they work awesome and i havent had to change the pads yet , about 15,000 kms

Hmm, that's kinda what i figured. What kind of pads do you use with the powerslots? Thanks for the reply!

Didn't you already say that you put the autozone rotors and pads on??? If so, then that should not be your problem. Check to see if a caliper is stuck, since she hears it all the time. Also, is it a constant noise, or kind of a pulsing noise? Any pulsing in the brake pedal while coming to a stop?

It's a constant noise and no pulsing while coming to a stop. What causes the Caliper to stick?

Time...
Not all vehicles need it but I try to use slide grease whenever i change the pads.

could have a bad cv joint or some other axle joint.

Maybe the actuall brake material fell off the pad. That has happened to me before with only 300 miles on a set of new pads i had bought

what about the little meatle clips (not squelers) that hold the pad it (not sure of there actual function) One of these could be bent and is rubbing on the rotor I've had this happen to me before. It sound like the brakes are shot when they are not.

^ I had the same problems with the metal clip being bent. However, if it's a grinding noise it could be the Caliper needs to be replaced.. i had a problem with my front passanger caliper piston going out and it caused a loud grinding noise even if the brakes weren't applied!

I don't mean to rub it in but i just replaced my warped rotors and bare pads with new napa oem replacements and now they're as quiet as a mouse. But i know what shes goin through man. Its hella annoying.

I also had this problem and I replaced the pads and rotors and it didn't help I thought I might of had a kink in my brake hose, or that my slides weren't lubed enough or that the caliper itself wasn't lubed properly because it was just the oddest thing only the outside of the passenger side rotor was wearing so it had to be in the caliper. The caliper was warped and is not common but happens somewhat often it's a factory defect and she just needs to buy new calipers if it sounds like my problem. Who changes her brakes? If it it's you try lubing the caliper there's a little nipple on the caliper.

the rotors on these cars are just to small for the size of the car ... :angry:
