i was talking to some guys on one of the cavalier sites, and he mentioned about the aluminum control arms on 99 aleros and grand ams, and swapping them onto a later one. anyone done this? and what kind of benefits would you see from aluminum ones instead of stamped steel. i know that they would be lighter, but to what benefit is that?

You could do it; it's a direct bolt-on (I only know of one person who has done it - tejohnson from the Grand Am board). The idea is less unsprung weight, which helps the suspension to react to the road more efficently.
Probably not anything you'd notice unless you replaced all the rubber bushings with polyurethane.

But the effort+cost vs. performace ratio isn't looking so good....
