If you have read my other posts you know my car is not well. I have to replace my power steering gear, which is roughly is a 500$ part, I have yet to me able to find and aftermarket equivilant and am thinking of turning to salvage, to try and get one cheaper. Is this a bad idea?

hard to say...depends on condition of the part and all...and plus whether or not its easy to pull out of the car or not. plus if its a $500 part new, ill guarantee a junkyard will prolly charge 200-300, maybe more for the part if its in good condition

Well I would rather buy a new part, if I could find one not built by GM that didn't cast too much, would then find out whether or not somone could explain where the power steering gear is?

If you know where is it, and it's not too hard to get to, you can go to a "u-pull-it" and get it for cheap, but in the name on the title, you have to bring your own tools and pull the part yourself. Not trying to insult you, but everytime I go, I get guys asking me to use my tools :rolleyes2:
If you can't pull it yourself, I'm sure you could go to a regular junkyard and get it. It will be a bit more, but still cheaper than a dealer.
Shop around first, there are a lot of auto parts stores on the internet. I like this one www.partstrain.com (http://www.aleromod.com/forums/www.partstrain.com)

www.car-part.com (http://www.car-part.com) shows what local junkyard has one and how much

Isn't that the part that actually moves the tires left and right?

I think hes talking about the actual rack thats mounted to the firewall...
Probably $100 at a JY if you can goto a you pull it place...

The rack is mounted to the subframe, not the firewall.
