How do I take down the back seats in my 2000 alero

There's a pair of straps hanging down from the trunk ceiling, in the centre from side to side, and closest to you when you're standing at the back looking into your trunk. They're black in my car, easy to overlook. Give 'em a tug and you should hear the mechanism release, then just fold the seats down.

It took me a while to figure that out too, then I felt like a retard when I found them. I was looking INSIDE the trunk farther. They hang down right from the outside edge of the top of the trunk opening. The one on the right is the passenger side 40, left is driver's side 60. Reach in a shove them forward, or go in the car and pull them down. Mine like to re-latch if you're not careful on the way around the car.

I'm working on a way for you to open them on the inside. Could be as simple as running a line to the handle and then slipping it under the bottom of the seat.

It certainly would be handy to be able to do it without having to get out of the car, but for security reasons I understand why they set it up like it is.

Someone who is sitting back there could unlock it and you could get in an accident, seat back wouldn't stay in place and could end up hurting them. But then again, my dad's Toreass and my bros 97 Grandamnit both let you lower the seat from the inside.

It's common advice to lock valuables in your trunk so they are out of site and it's more difficult to get into the trunk as you can't use a slim jim or anything discrete like that, you gotta pick/bust the lock. If someone can slim jim their way into your car then pop the seats from in there then they have full access to your trunk. It's not a huge security advantage, but if a thief is short on time it could make all the difference.

Hey thanks alot u guys U help out alot. I put in my new sony 6x9 and they sound great. But would know how to replace the door speakers and do ya happen to know the size of them?

There's atleast one screw on the door panel (I think it's behind a reflector), then the panel's just attached by plastic clips. Just gotta work the panel off carefully so not to bust the clips.

And they're 4x6.

Another security issue solved by putting the latches inside the trunk:
you can't lock a person in there, unless they're all tied up or dead, but that's mafia stuff...:P

ok.. sorry but I had to point this one out! If you use a slim jim to get inside the car you can just press the button on the driverside door to pop the trunk! you wouldn't have to worry about taking down the back seats...

/\ /\ /\ That is true, however on my 99 I had a switch on the mechanism for the lock in the trunk where I could switch it over so the trunk release on the driver side door would not work, the only way to get in the trunk would be the key. The only year I've seen that on is the 99 though, as I know my 04 doesn't have that option, but there is a latch to pop the trunk if you get locked in there!!! :thumbsup:

I have the lockout switch on my 02 as well as the glow in the dark handel to pop the trunk lid from the inside

That's right too, I'm still not used to being able to do that without the key turned to ACC like in my previous cars. I'm not sure if mine has the lockout switch.

All of them have the lockout switch, it is a lil red tab on the locking/latch mechanism on the trunk lid, and it faces into the trunk... flip it, and it dont matter how many times they press that button, it just aint gonna open...

Mine has the switch too, i have a 2001 and I think it has the handle also to pop the trunk from inside. I think those are going ot be mandatory incase you get locked in your trunk.

I have the same lockout switch but for some reason it doesn't work???

My guess would be that the last guy you locked in your trunk messed around with it cuz he wasnt quite a "stiff" when you threw him in... :P
