Hello everybody, I'm new to the boards here. My wife and I just bought a 2000 Alero GX 2 door 5 speed. We are from Canada eh!!
It has the cassette radio, and to keep with the stock appearance, I would like to replace it with an OEM cd player. My question though, would a radio from a 01+ Alero fit a 2000? It should bolt right up, but the wire connector might be an issue. Anybody have any insight into it?
Thanks guys!

im not sure a 2001 will work right in a 2000. it SHOULD, but the 2001 is a class 2 data-bus radio(chimes run through it). the harnesses, size and bolt pattern are def the same tho

Sry for my noobness, but isn't it in 2001 Alero's that the radio was linked to the airbags? Maybe that's what you are talking about when refering to class 2 data-bus (Someone already told me its a PITA to put an after market deck on a GM nowadays with stock radio in the trunk)

Yes I believe there is some correlation between the headunit and airbags. However, not sure how true that is... But, it took me about 30 minutes to an hour to install an entire system into my car.. so let me tell u it definately is not a PITA, it is basically a cake walk.
about 5 minutes for an aftermarket cd player. Just needed to buy a harness and modify it for the deck i was using. But installation takes no longer than a few screws and a few wires.

But why spend the extra money for an OEM part, when you can get a pioneer premier Deck for under $200.
They play MP3/WMA/ITUNES
And the features are endless whereas a OEM can do none of the above and is very restrictive when trying to tune and balance sound in your vehicle.

it doesnt affect airbag or else places like best buy would have you sign a waiver before installing a HD

5 minutes to install a fit kit?
BS!
1/2 hour to install a full system?
BS!
To the OP-
Anything 2001 on down will work. 2002 they switched the harness, so they wont work ;)

yeeeeahhhh. have you seen the crap that happens with those? anyone with a half decent system will have them vibrated off the wires in no time. can you say residential wiring?

Ok, how do you install a radio in 5 minutes?
Please tell me oh master installer :rolleyes2:
To install a HU into the alero you need to pull up the shifter plate. THen you gotta pull out the bezel. Remove the climate controls. two bolts.
Then install the fit kit. Put it all back together and hope the radio fits in right.
There is no way on Gods green earth you can do this all in 5 minutes. From start to finish, including wiring the harness. no way.
There is no way you can install an entire system in 1/2 hour.
If you can do all that, you should try select products installer challenge. Hell your on your way to becoming a top installer...

well, in an alero, i dont take the hvac off ryan, should have plenty of room leavin it on there and puttin the kit in. but makin the deck fit with the room that behind there. lol right.

My point.
I dont think usign a more common deck would be to easy to route wires with that bezel still there.

jvc's fit fine, pioneers dont, alpines....if you really shove that shit in there. but including wiring the harness and shit, theres no fucking way it takes 5 minutes. i mean, a ford single din unit takes longer than that with wiring included. and that doesnt require takin any pieces off

15 minute job, didn't remove HVAC or anything. Pioneer fits.

Yea, putting the radio in is easy. The longest parts are wiring up the plug to the radio harness and splicing into the accessory ignition wire (or a switched power wire). Ripping out the stock radio and bolting in the new one is nothin.

i was jus sayin that particular model is a low end one, and has a shorter chassis than the higher end models. almost all of JVCs are short chassised.

gotcha, ya it's low end, but it does the job :)

JVC Arsenals are very nice, the higher you go, the better it gets.
I had the KD-AR7000 and I really liked the deck. In fact, I wish I wouldnt of sold it for spending cash during vacation...

personally I think it looks shitty when you pull out a head unit and see 'wire nuts' but if you use them and they fall off then you dont know how to splice properly.Ive used quite a few of them in the past when ive ran out of connectors or barrel crimps, and never had a problem whatsoever and theyre not just for residential wiring either. If theyll hold on 3 phase motors Im pretty sure theyll do in a car.

3 Phase motors is irrellevant.
Your on a car that will get jostled around more than the 50 HP 3 phase motors on the Lathes/Mills where I work...
The most secure method is soldering.

took me two hours to install cause something didn't match up quite right with the power wireing.... took that long to figure it out. haha It was my first install though so that's my excuse. :p

i generally use crimp caps for decks and shit. but i still like to solder the more important jobs. a soldering torch is the way to go, screw the electric guns or even the butane guns. torch ftw.

Irrelevent my ass, there is more movement or "Jostling" around on a conveyor at a pallet manufacturing plant than in your car.I simply used 3 phase motors as an example of vibration similar to a car and to prove that they do work fine, although they are a shotty way of doing it.I do agree that soldering would be better for a car stereo. Also a 50 hp 3 phase motor is poor example because @ 600V(which Im guessing they are) would require #6 AWG or larger at which point it gets hard to do splicing with wire nuts, therefore they must be connected with a barrel crimp or split bolt, and any lower voltage motors @ 50hp would require a larger conductor yet.
