Keyfob Programming?

I have a 2000 GLS. It normally comes standard with a keyfob. but I have bought the car used and there wasnt a keyfob, but only dealer copies of the keys.

I have a few GM keyfobs that might be able to be programmed to the car.

Ok my question is How do I get my Alero into programming mode? And once I get it into that mode what do I have to do to the Keyfob so my Car recognizes the signal?

I stress the first part of the question alittle more than the second. And I dont want to go to a dealer and pay money for this, as it is only a convenience issue not a nessecity.

Search, for one.

However, you can't program it yourself unless you have an OBDII programmer. You'll have to pay someone for it, or find a friend with a scanner.

your car has to be equipped with it first though...can't do it on a GX

Yeah, I know. Two came with the car, one NEVER worked, the other had the little clip that holds the battery in place break off

Is that the only way? B/c I know for a fact that No Ford needs one its just a key in ignition trick. And the same is for most chevys that I know of. It just seems weird that Olds would make it so difficult.

I dont mean to question, but I'm just covering my bases.

If you're talking about what I call the remote, there are good instructions on grandamgt.com (You have to be a member, and then search under remote programming.)

You shouldn't need an OBD2 programmer for a 2000 if it is the right part number (call the dealer with the VIN), and the batteries work.

I have programmed a couple model year 2000 aleros myself... it really isn't that hard.

all the dealers around me will do it for free... just give them a call, i had 2 programmed a few months ago and it took 5 mins at the dealer and was absolutely free...

Fob came in the mail today. Gonna take it to the dealership tomorrow and see if they charge me.
