More photos and details to come in the next couple of weeks as I get more of the install completed.

I know the this looks ghetto from the top of the console lid, but it's just temporary.

Wow man I never thought of that. Thats a great idea glassin in the front cupholder for controls. Man I was looking for a place to install switches that would not look to out of place. Now excuse me while I go do some glassing.

Voodosoup
03-28-2004, 04:38 PM
I stayed up until 3:00am last night reading tutorials online.
Pretty easy to do.

I'm going to mount the USB Griffen PowerMate (blue-glowing brushed aluminum controller knob) into my glassed over cupholder

Voodosoup
03-28-2004, 04:43 PM
I think I'm going to glass over the center console lid to create a nice finished look for the track-pad mount. I think it'll look nice sunken into a fiberglass cover. I'll probably re-texture it and paint it. to keep a factory look.

Voodosoup
04-01-2004, 05:21 PM
^^^^^Sitting on my desk in my room^^^^^ :D

Not sure where/how I'm going to mount it yet.

I'll be rigging up somthing temporarily so I can unhook and stash it quickly for now.

It looks like the weather will be decent this weekend so I should be able to get my piece fabricated for the console lid and finish up my piece for the cupholder.

Still waiting to get a dock so I can make a mount for the computer.

Going to have 300+ cd's worth of music at my fingertips, dvd, gps navigation, eventually wi-fi.

If I go with a console on the headliner to mount the screen, I'll probably put in a rear-view camera.

have fun mounting that lilliput dude... PITA to understate it.

i've been contemplating putting mine in front of the stereo bezel, molded into the bezel, or jammed behind the bezel. course, much more difficult to decide w/o having the screen in my hands (still in japan or some such place til next week).

aleromaster i believe has gotten one to fit, and storm said he has it mounted upside down and it fits w/no mods.

Aleromaster
04-04-2004, 05:45 PM
Yeah to mold it in the dash you have to move the HVAC controls down an inch if you want to keep the buttons. I was going along that route but in my final sanding I messed up bad and sanded off half the icons on the hvac controls.

Voodosoup
04-04-2004, 07:04 PM
I wa thinking about having it molded to the outside of the radio opening like cybermob said. I'm still not sure.......

That's the only thing I'm stuck on for this project........

I might have to look for someone locally to install the screen and move my head unit

Aleromaster
04-04-2004, 09:43 PM
I actually put myhead unit in my glove box. I would like a headunit less system but I'm waiting for the XM-pcr to be intergrated with MediaCar before I ditch the head unit. I only use it for XM and cd anyways. I would rather have my screen molded in so I will just have to wait till I can get anohter bezel

cybermob2

when relocating (if) your HU, keep in mind they don't work for poop if they aren't level, cds that is.

it never occurred to me, but its not like i'm ever going to use my cd player again anyway. all my cds come from my computer, which is gonna sync with my car!

Storm
04-05-2004, 12:19 PM
This looks interesting.
I have had my setup for some months now.
I have had some problems but solved the most of them.

Now I only have to get rid of the interference when I start up the carputer.

Good luck with your carputers!

I agree :D
try angling the bracket upward a little, b/c wouldn't looking down at the screen be weird if it was parallel to the head unit like that?

Voodosoup
04-11-2004, 01:42 PM
I'm going to rebend my mount so that the screen is totally below the radio and it will be angled up a little bit more.

Thx!

Over the next few weeks hopefully.

It depends on the weather and how much I play golf/screw off/mountain bike.

But I also need to get crackin' on the fiberglass box for the trunk. I'll probably start that this week/weekend sometime.

Just a little update. I think I finally have everything I need to get this project up and running, just need to get my screen molded in and I'll be set. I also added an external 80gb firewire drive as I had maxed out the internal drive on my ibook with the 364 cd's I ripped and the damn navigational software.

Here is the track pad molded in, I just have to fill some low spots and put the finish on it.

Voodosoup

Screen molding underway. I was going to have someone else od it for $150 but they backed out, so I'm doing it myself. It won't look quite as nice as being totally flush with or sunken into the old trim but this was my easiest option to save the buttons on the front. I will be repainting and adding texture to the whole trim piece. Now if I could just get some vinyl overlays for the heater controls......

thanks, the cosole lid is fully operational and the wire runs inside the lid where you would normally put a garage door opener. I had to drill holes to pass the wire from the console lid down into the hinge area of the center console.

^^^^Thanks!

I took it out for a test drive tonight for about an hour.
Every thing is working better than expected!!!!

Now all I have left ot do is wire the power inverter that is running my firewire HD and usb hub to a relay so it automatically turns on and off, and I also have to wire in the Kenwood siriurs receiver(still waiting for one last piece for this) .

This has to be the best mod I've done to the car by a mile.
to have my whole music collection at my fingertips plus a full featured turn by turn voice navigation system just rocks!! :pimp:

Umm, too much stuff rigged into the accesory circuit. I actuyally think it was the cigarette lighter adapter for the screen. When I'd plug it it it would spark and then blow a fuse.

But it's all wire off of my dist block for all my audio stuff and both the notebook car adapter and the adapter for the screen are fused and running off of a relay to turn them on when the ignition is turned to on. Pretty slick....

The screen itself was $289+shipping
Tube of Duramix $29
Duramix Gun $31
Applicator Tips $12
Misc sand paper, zip ties etc... $10
SEM Texture spray $15
black Spray paint $4

Grand Total = $390

Plus an assload of your free-time to do the project.

If you want it done professionally expect to tack on another $400-600 to the above total. :o

Big bump on the how to. There are lots of easy ways to set up the comp itself but being able to do the screen oneslef would save a crapload of money.
