So I just got off the phone with the dealership. They are wanting to put in a new transmission because of the torque converter code that I've been throwing as of lately. The estimate he gave me was $3200...haha What on earth? I'm on the phone with GM and they're going to help me, the question is merely how much they're going to help me. I've got 58K on a 2004 with about 6 more months left on the warranty, but I'm out by miles. I hope for darn sure this kind lady decides to cover 100% of the repair so I don't get caught and get screwed. Anyhow, thanks for reading.
dont get your hopes up. they probably wont do anything for you other then lower the price on the tranny by a couple hundred dollars

Couple hundred? Try a couple thousand....they are willing to pay for $2400 worth of the repair, I'd still have to come up with $800. I dont have it, so unless the service manager wants to go back to bat for me with GM, the Alero has seen its last days and will be found on autotrader and ebay very soon. If you want any of my parts, you may want to put your requests in now so you can have first dibs.

you cant afford $800 to have a new transmission put in, but you could afford chrome wheels and a body kit? :emotlol:

I would merely suggest your just keep your comments to yourself...You have no idea who I am or what I've been through over the past few months/years to be able afford those things then, but not now. So keep it to yourself.

Have you considered having your current tranny rebuilt? Might be cheaper, My total was 1300 and I only paid 500. I don't know if this is an option for you i hope you can work something out

Were these prices for a rebuilt tranny or a new one. Mine has gone out and the dealership wants $3k to rebuild and a local shop wants $1500-1800, are these prices high for a rebuild ?

No they aren't $1800 is a decent price.
Mine was new gears and a used case for $2K.
As long as Labor is included in that price, that's a good price. Gotta pull the motor to pull the tranny

i was referring to the 3k estimate.
depending on the vehicle and type of trans a rebuild price (SHOULD) vary between 1-and sometimes 2k.
there could be exceptions i guess but the alero is definitely not one of them. I guesstimate that my little auto tranny would cost maybe 1,200 or 1,300 if i was a customer of my dad's.
I may need a rebuild soon? The guy that owned my alero before me tore it up, locked up the motor so it (the engine) needed a rebuild. It has 104k miles on it now and i have put that car through some SHIT!!! im suprised its still holding up so well. Im shocked yours needed a rebuild so soon!

It kinda pisses me off, I have a 2000 GLS with 78,000 miles. I guess I'm not particularly easy on it tho. I bought tires in September and the fronts are bald and the backs have huge flatspots. :rolleyes2: But it started slipping pretty bad so I changed the fluid and right after that it acted like it was in park while in reverse and Drive while in Neutral. So I had to turn the car off to push it backwards. Does anyone know where I can get a tranny cooler ? Or how difficult it is to install ?

I have 88,500 on my 2001 2.4 without any problems. I did change the tranny fluid & filter at 65,000. Those of you that are having problems with the transmission, did you ever service it prior to the problem?
