Alero 2 Envy

I found a low mileage Alero that has the 2.4 that was T-boned bad. The motor is cheap and want to know if I swap it with the cluster will the mileage show what was on the wrecked car ?
Or is the mileage stored in the computer, so it doesnt matter if the cluster is swapped out since its digital ?

To answer,
No, it's in the BCM. (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread/t-38671.html) <~~~~ this is total Bull Shit
I don't care what the hyperlink says on the other forum that's BS too, I know, I have swapped clusters in different Aleros and the cluster retained it's mileage removed from the other car.
It's stored in the cluster. If you want I have a cluster that reads 187,000 miles :) you shouldnt be changing your cluster anyway the cluster is supposed to read how mnay miles are on the car NOT THE ENGINE!!!

you can take the cluster apart so you can have the good cosmetic parts and the correct electronics. I did it.

Yeah I have seen the white face gauge inlays and I have also replaced the lens cover over a busted one I bought, Its a really easy job...almost too easy so if you are looking at buying an Alero with a long span of no entires on Car Fax and low mileage beware!!!

The mileage is stored in the BCM also. But you can swap out clusters and get different readings. YES. But the original miles is stored in the bcm as well. So You can swap out the cluster to get lower mileage reading, BUT only if you don't ever sell the car. So if you do this, you need to keep the car forever. If someone does a carfax or whatever VIN scan, they will know something was up.
Just swap the engine and remember what mileage it was swapped at. Last thing you need is mileage fraud. Since texas has those state inspections too. they know what mileage your car was from last year.

Yeah I know about the laws, but I plan on keeping th car until it rots or burns to the ground. I just have a self consience thing about driving around with a 40,000 engine and your odometer saying 120,000.
If I do decide to sell it down the line it will probally be for what its worth, maybe 1000 or so and who will check mileage on a 1000 car. I know I wouldnt, especially getting soemthing that cheap, as long as it runs Lets Go !

Don't count on the car being worth more when the new engine is installed there is a short simple rule regarding car repairs and most upgrades.
1. Money and time spent keeping car running is worth zero at selling time.
People buying cars expect them to be running, I wish this wasnt the case as I just bought a BRAND NEW zero miles LX5 engine for an Intrigue that I drove home from Columbus which blew up on me. Since Kelleys blue book doesnt have a option to put a brand new motor in, it's highly unlikely that I can expect to get anymore money for the car when I sell it because it has a new engine.
On the other hand I am happy you are keeping the car forever!!!
