View Full Version : Stock radio w/ subs

I don't want to replace the Radio in my PA because it's pretty nice and tied in with the steering wheel n such, but I still want subs.
I have the RCA inputs spliced into the wires for one of the rear speakers and it sounds like complete shit.
I MAY have gotten the polarity wrong (connected the + on the RCA to - on the speakers, and vice versa), but I'm not sure how much of a sound quality difference it'd make.
Is this my problem of is there a better way to connect it all up?

There is a box they make that plugs directly into the back of your radio...my buddy had his hooked up this way on his Mazda 6 and thats how I'm going to do mine...if i do it...I checked and just the faceplate adapter is 299, screw that

Hmm, this is gonna be tough. I find a bunch for the Park Avenue, but only for the ones without the concert sound system. grr.

does this box have a seperate subwoofer control? If not, good chance your going to blow your factory speakers unless you have your bass turned down...but then you wont get much power to your subs even if your gains are turned all the way up.

does your PA have a factory amplifier for the rear speakers?

Hmm, I always run high bass and low treb on stock speakers and haven't had a problem, maybe I should be more careful with that.
And yes, it's got a little amp in the trunk.
This amp: http://media.mainstreetcommerce.com/3.9/media/item_image_sheet.aspx?domain=lkqonline.com&item_guid=249b2c68-c8bd-4961-9aee-1b002a1a7398&image_guid=e8a63971-9c85-400b-9035-10be3919a4e2
I'm sure it'd be better to tie into that, but I don't know which wire is which, because there's only one big plug on that amp with about 10 (maybe more, I didn't count) wires on it.
Sounds like you may have a plan, Bratch? :D

at the amp:
+RR - pin F11 - Dk Grn
-RR - pin F9 - Lt Blu/Blk
+LR - pin F12 - Dk Blu/Wht
-LR - pin F10 - Lt Blu/Blk
those are going out of the amp to the rear "subs"

Yeh, I would try to be careful on how much bass your pushing to the speakers...
High bass on factory GM speakers = boom!
Factory GM speakers suck unless you have the BOSE system

I agree with them mostly...I have factory GM speakers but I keep high treble low bass and I use a line out convertor installed professionally and my amps are at half gain. Sounds good. Of course I want to replace the stock speakers...
in short...
Keep the bass down on stock speakers

Stock speakers sucks for almost all companies as I could see in all my cars. Made of cheap foam and bad connections. They eventually go out pretty easily.
Changing them doesnt imply getting a new HU.

Wow, I have never blown a set of stock GM speakers in any of my cars. I've also never had a Monsoon system, i just have the regular setup. And i can assure you that my bass is set at "+6"

Wouldn't I want to tie into the NON-amplified lines going into the factory amp for hooking up my subs/amp?
Seems to me that tying into those would be the same as I earlier right at the speaker's connection.

a line out convertor changes high level to low level, not low level to low level. you can TRY tapping the inputs, but i wouldnt.
and to whoever said to not tap in at speakers cause it will fry the factory amp is full of shit. line out convertors dont change the load.

Sounds good to me, so it'd go like this (for speaker wiring)?

That's really weird. For whatever it's worth someone told me if you have the fact amp the crossover for the front components is done in the amp itself, not in a standard crossover on the speakers. That was a big issue when I had my speakers replaced since i hooked them up to my deck instead of the fact amp.
Don't quote me on this part (I'm not 100% sure) but the fact amp takes a 4 channel low level input, and has a 4 channel 6 speaker output. If you're hooking up subs you should be able to tap into the low level input of the fact amp, add RCA's to the end and then hook it into whichever amp. No converter required.
In theory you should be able to also hook into the high level inputs going to the rear speakers. Basically, as mentioned in another post you can buy a box that converts high level to low level, and then tack rca's to the end of it and it should also work. The only thing I can see with that is if the fact amp has really crappy response and cuts out the lower bass frequencies (not sure if it does or doesn't).

Ah! Nevermind!
I just had a revelation.
My amp has a LOC built in somewhat.
Well, high input!

Didn't notice until just now!
Well needless to say I'm excited to go and wire that baby up.
