So I have a question for you guys, possibly even a n00b question. I don't know a whole lot about cars but my Alero started having problems with the gas gauge dropping to empty if the cars running for more than 5 minutes. If you turn the car off and turn it on again it goes right back to full.
Any advice or ideas on what this could be and how to fix it?
Thanks

Its a common problem, IIRC its a problem with the float...take it to a garage, they'll know exactly what to do.

and don't drive anywhere very far without know exactly how much gas you have until you get it fixed

If you know what kinda of milage you get between fill-ups let it run down before you get it fixed.
Not that it's neccassary, but it's easier to lower an almost empty tank instead of an almost full one

or you could work smarter not harder and syphon the gas out of the tank ;)

Hmmm....... I figured it's something with the float. I was hoping there would be a quick fix. Any way of fixing it without taking it to the garage? I really don't want to spend any money on this car.

nah......... i was acutally suprised to learn that almost all new cars have a "baffle" system in the filler tube to the tank that prevent you from sticking a tube down into the tank to syphon gas out.
the baffle prevents the tube from actually reaching the inside of the tank

That's why i just hook a hose up to the pressure test port on the engine and let the fuel pump do it's thing and pump the gas out.... Did that on a suburban before it got taken back on the lease return.

Yeah my buddy did that once to me when my car was sitting at his house, popped the hood with a screw driver, hooked 12volts to the fuel pump, pumped almost all the gas outta my car.
EDIT: but he used the pressure line instead of the test port.

we did that with my friend's Z24. we just hooked the fuel pump up to the battery and pumped all the gas out of her.

Hmm... this all sounds like it solves the problem of getting the fuel out of the tank. But doesn't really solve what I should when I get in the tank. I appreciate the advice. I think unfortunately I'll have to take the car to the shop. I think I'll just live with it and keep hoping it gets stolen and totalled.

So you guys are gonna laugh. I sure feel like an idiot. I figured out what's wrong with it. The idiot at the gas station didn't put the gas cap on properly.

you dont pump your own gas?

Depends where I go. I have this thing about only filling up at Shell and if I'm on the north end of the city there's only one and they pump it for you. If I'm on the east side it's self-serve.

SLAP THAT LITTLE BITCH!!!! and the reason he didn't pump his own gas is because lately the weather has been fucking retarded with blowing snow and cold temps.

Damn rights! It's fuckin cold out here. Not the worst I've seen but it's still -25 here.
I still don't know how you put a gas cap on wrong. Like it was cross threaded in the compartment.
Just a question for ya greenbastard. What kind of mileage have you been getting? And do you have a remote start?
Cause my Alero's been licking balls in the mileage department. I'm getting about 350kms on 45L of fuel.
greenbastard
02-28-2007, 10:38 PM
i don't have remote start and i have really calculated my gas milage. i have a 2.4 with wai so it will be different than yours. the only thing i can tell you is that i drove to the Red Hot Chillie Peppers concert in Saskatoon. i filled my tank and drove there and i think it is 250kms exactly. i drove there and killed a half a tank. we got lost in saskatoon so we couldn't try to get back without filling up. i wouldn't want to try anyway because we drove home after the concert. 480 to 500 kms per tank highway. never tried in the city.

Yeah I have this same problem, though im just gonna wait until the guage just stops working completly. Its so funny watching it go from empty to full, its almost like it fills itself up. It only happens when I go lower than a quarter tank, but I have gotten 310 miles per tank before.

from what you keep posting about the temperatures that far north I call shenanigans on this statement. If you want to say you have a short ram intake that is fine but with temperatures like -25 and what not there is no warm air there so you cannot have a WAI.

Well I know if I go pure highway I can get around 600-650 kms depending on how far I drive. I did Saskatoon to Edmonton in one tank. I've done Saskatoon to Regina and back in one tank. It was pushing it though. I got in the city with 610kms on the tank and I managed to get 49L of fuel into it.
It's just the city that I get like 350 kms.
Is the gas gauge problem a common problem in Aleros?

My gauge hasn't been working right for over a year. It creeps up while I drive, and empty is somewhere near a quarter tank. I just reset the trip when I fill up, and make sure to get more before I hit 300 miles (I can make it farther, but why?). Haven't been on the side of the road since. And I swear that time the gas froze in the fuel line, because when I filled it up after getting a couple gallons from a friend who lived nearby the highway I was stranded on, it didn't add up to near 14 gallons.
