Yes you can put larger speakers in the front doors. The place that I bought my speakers from were able to install 6" two way JL's where the 4x6's used to lay.

I got some adapter plates off ebay that should work to put 6.5 in the door.

I honestly don't remember if they put 6" or 6" 1/2 speakers in my door, it was a almost 3 years ago this summer. I beleive they used some sort of adapter like Cliff8928 said.

does anyone know off hand how much space i will have between my door and the door planel at the speaker location. this is when there is no speaker. i do not have power windows if that pocket makes a difference.

I don't think the power window makes a difference. When I had my panel off, it didn't seems that the window bracket was that close to the speaker.
I could be wrong thought, It's been a while since I did that

I made a wood/fiberflass deal up and my fairly large 5.25" Rainbows fit in just fine...

I wonder if anyone has ever tried cramming 6x9s in the front doors. Is it possible??

there could be some custom work involved, you would probably have to cut some metal in the doors, fab your own plates, trim the door panels...
