View Full Version : Your Ohms

I keep reading threads on who has what speakers, and who thinks what company is better....

everyone always says what type of system they are running, and how many watts... but no-one ever says what ohms they run at. Of course, if you want a system to REALLY pound, you gotta run at less. (or more SQ, you run higher)

personally, i've been running 1400W lanzar amp and 2 Fosgate He2's at 4ohm for a while. It rattles my car pretty good, for myself...

Just wondered what other systems are on the board, and what you guys run... specifically.

I'd have a hard time understanding if someone posted "get these subs, they sound great!" when that person is running a 1ohm system. They'll be noisy... but thats about all.

i guess i never really under stood what the different in ohms meant. is it the more the harder they hit?

the lower the ohms the lower resistance to the voltage trying to power your subs. I have two four ohm subs wired to 2 ohm and it definately pounds

different subs require them to be run at different ohms. depends on the number of voice coils usually as to how many ohms the subs will best perform at.

i dont run subs unless i can run them at 1 ohm....... which also then requirs an amp thats stable at 1 ohm as well. go LOUD or go home

alerocar, basically...

(figurative system that could sustain any variable)

if you had a: 400W system at 4ohm... that would play at 800W at 2ohm.. or 1600W at 1ohm.

each step down, doubles the wattage, but also takes away sound quality... which is why most home theatre systems sound really good, but aren't that loud. Most run at 8ohm. (headphones usually run at 16 or 32)

I have 2 Inifinty Kappa Perfect VQDs 1600W 4ohms each wired to 2 ohms and 2 Orion 800.2s capable of 1600 watts each. I like how mine sounds...I have my amps both set to half gain and my bass in car is half with 7 notches to go.

three fosgate 10 dvc's running 2ohms at 1600 watts.

lol, some nice misconceptions here.

Just because your running at a lower Ohm doest mean its going to Pound, or be SPL aimed.

And just because you drop ohms from 4 to 2 doesnt necessarily mean you double power. It usually ends up that way, but its not always a given. Depends on amplifier topology.

different subs require them to be run at different ohms. depends on the number of voice coils usually as to how many ohms the subs will best perform at.

i dont run subs unless i can run them at 1 ohm.......

Say what?

Why would a sub require itself to run at a different ohm? lol

And how does the number of coils determine how good the sub will perform under what conditions?

All DVC subs do is provide greater flexibility in a system. If you have a DVC thats 400 WRMS 4Ohm coils, you wire it up in series-8 Ohms and feed it 400, then wire it to 2 Ohms and feed it 400 watts....

Da da dum!

It SOUNDS THE SAME!!!!

If you can run @ 2 or 1 ohm it provides a more cost effective means of driving the subs as you can buy class d amps, which are more efficent and give you more power per $1.

Again, Ohms dont mean squat except for how its wired to provide "X" amount of power to them. The THD induced by going to a lower impedance isnt something any human ear can detect- so save that argument as its not valid.

just bought sum new RF p3's
now im running 500watt 6x9's at 4 ohms on a 500watt power series amp
and 2 Rockford Fosgate P3's at 2 ohms on a 1600watt power series amp

Rockford fosgate 3 way 6x9s
Rockford fosgate 2 way 6inch with cross overs
Rockford fosgate tweets into the cross overs
Was running a 400 watt JL Audio 12 in a slot port box with a earthquake 400 watt amp at 2 ohms now im running an earthquake sub in a custom box with the earthquake amp at 2 ohms could be running abit more into it but I have an 18 inch dual voice coil cerwin vega stroker that is going to be going in soon need to buy a bigger amp:coolio:

my PG 12" runs at 4 ohms

One thing to add too... some amps don't run at 1 ohm, or even 2 ohms.

well to add on to things...most amps are sold as "xxxx watts stable to x ohms" although its all about matching your subs power ratings to a specific amp.....never buy an amp before you buy subs, cause your more likely to end up with a system that dont match and you dont get the most power out of the system (or worst case scenario, you blow the subs by overpowering them, or you blow the amp by having too powerful subs, although thats something i doubt would happen anyway, but theoretically its possible)

ive currently got a set of Kicker Comp VR 12s that are rated at 400 rms/800 max, and ive got em hooked up to a 2 channel 1600 watt Power Acoustik Goth series amp, works like a champ, plenty loud but nothing too overpowering...

if i wanted to do it right i would probably go to a class D 1 channel amp and rewire it a bit, but the amp was too cheap to pass up

Actually, the amp is the most important part of the sysytem. You should acquire your subs, around what kind of wattage your amp puts out. Ryan from ohio, lol I'm glad someone actually knows what they are talking about. I on the other hand am running a 15'' mempis mojo, which is powered by a jbl bp 1200.1 @ 1 ohms in a 3.5 ^ft ported box at about 33-35 hz

I have a kenwood KAC-9103D 1800 watt Class D Mono Power Amplifier running at 1 ohm with 2-12" Orion C2 400 Watt 2 Ohm Subwoofers. and for a deck i have a jensen VM9311TS in-dash dvd player. so thats what im running. :-)

Got dual Alpine type R 12's max 4 ohms each..im running at like.. uhm i forget maybe 2 ohms each? 1500W max each, and a gay amp only 1000W... gonna get a better one later on. Just wanted to get my system together so i snatched it up for a good price.

I'm running 2 dual 4ohm voice coil powerbass 12's with a kenwood excelon amp which I feed with a 2 channel crossover to knock any noise down further and have the subs wired down to 2ohms each I don't have the amp bridged because I can use each channel seperatley and get 300 watts to each sub. I also have them in a loaded sealed enclosure. I have yet to turn it all the way up, it hurts my body long before I get there.

Single 4 Ohm sub bridged on one side of a 4 channel amp...

:rolleyes2:
