View Full Version : Just got an Alero yesterday...

To make a very long story short, I had bought a 2004 Mercury Sable, new, in October 2004 and got royally screwed. I had a lot of negative equity and my payments were $423 a month, not counting insurance. I had to get out, which meant taking a huge financing hit as I have no money for a down payment (because my current car took all my money) so I went to CarMax to see what they could do for me.

I settled on a 2003 Alero GL Coupe, in Gold with tan cloth interior, with the LA1 engine and 62k miles. It had the best combination of features, lowest miles and styling and so far it's been far more satisfying to drive (it feels firmly planted on the road and doesn't exhibit huge amounts of body roll) than the Sable, and even though I lost 30hp I don't feel it, and the exhaust note is way more aggressive, it growls.

I have a few issues, it was a smoker's car so it really needs to air out for a few months, and all the glass needs to be cleaned really well. The passenger side window won't roll up fully so it whistles on the freeway, and the parking brake won't hold the car on a hill, but I have a 30 day bumper-to-bumper warranty so I'll be going right back to CarMax today to have them fix that.

I was wondering how to tell what options I have, I know GM usually puts a sticker on their cars listing option codes or something similar, but I don't know how to read it, I believe it's right under the vehicle information tag on the driver's side door. One of the options listed on the Edmunds Website is "Sport Suspension" and while the ride is much firmer than the Sable I don't know if that's just with the standard suspension, it probably is, the Sable was a whale.

Anyway that's all I've got, I don't even have pics yet because it was dark by the time I signed all the papers and got home...so yeah, that's about all I've got.

Well, welcome to the site. I'm probably least knowledgable person here though lol. I've had my Alero almost a year and I love it. My biggest complaint with my 2003 Coupe is the combo of Power drivers side seat + seat that doesn't go past 90 degrees lol. And again welcome. I'm sure someone has some more information on where to find out more about the options on your Alero. (If you can't find your spark plug wires then you don't have any, took me a while to figure that out)

welcome to the forums!! im new too, but i had the same problems with the window[s] and parking brake not holding... the parking brake turned out to just be my front pads that needed total replacement and the window problem was worn out switches and the regular needed replacing...hopefully that warranty will be good for those options and you should be set :)

welcome!

if you say that the Alero has less body roll than the Sable then i wouldn't even want to know how bad it is with the Sable! Aleros are very soft, even softer than my late '96 Taurus (same as the '96 Sable) :)

Anyway, good luck with your Alero!

Eh! Welcome to the site. Glad you're enjoying the Alero as much as you say you are - she's a fun one to drive for sure.

Loose e-break? Ah, just need to take up some of the slack - look underneath forward of the driver side rear tire, you'll see what I'm talking about.

None the less... welcome, and hope you're enjoying the forum.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I still haven't had a lot of time to get to know the car, tomorrow it's going back in to get the passenger side window fixed and while they'll look at the parking brake, I think a lot of it was me not being used to a handbrake. I've only driven cars with pedal operated parking brakes and I didn't know you needed to really ratchet back the handbrake on a hill.

I'm also going to pick up a Haynes manual today if I can find one at Books-a-Million, otherwise I'll just hit up Amazon. I don't have my own garage so I'm kind of limited in what I can do, but I like knowing (in general) how my car works, even if I can't go in depth.

As far as the ride quality, if the Alero is soft than the Sable was a morbidly obese whale, because the steering is much tighter, the car feels glued to the road and doesn't want to slide/roll. The Sable didn't ride poorly either, it was just very bland. Part of it could be the tires, the Sable had the stock Continental ContiTrac Touring tires, the Alero has brand new Kumho Ecsta SPTs, which is awesome since we're coming out of winter so the fact that they don't handle the cold/snow is moot...for now.

That's all I've got for now, I'm at work and was just browsing to kill time...it's funny, I got this car to save money, but because I enjoy driving it so much that's going to be tough. I think I'll manage.

The Service Parts Identification Label is on the underside of the spare tire cover. it will list all your options. RPO code FE2 is the standard suspension, FE3 is the sport suspension.

Thanks, I found the sticker and I do have the Sport Suspension...that would go a way toward explaining why it feels so much more nimble than the Sable.

Is there a list of what some of the other codes mean?
Edit: Nevermind, I found the list here on the forums.

Welcome.

Febreeze and open windows for the day can get rid of the smell, mostly.

Took a year to get that smell out of the Delta, still yellowed inside
