View Full Version : A/C cooled intake.

If colder air taken into the engine results in better efficiency and more power, would using the A/C unit in a car to cool that air result in any gain? Or would the gain generated be the same as the extra power used to run the A/C for a net gain of zero? When you crank that puppy up to full fan speed and only have it coming outta one vent you get some good, cool air flow. I don't know how easy it would be to route that air to the intake compartment either.

Are you talking about rerouting your intake to inside the car?

I don't know if it will help

No, I meant routing a vent off the A/C to the engine's air intake (probably straight to the filter).

Air conditioning robs power, so it is counter-productive.

Yea, you won't gain anything. If anything, you won't make up enough with the cool air to even make up for the power-sucking A/C compressor.

Plus with the a/c going into the engine bay the a/c would have to work harder and cause you to have less power. Even more on hot days.

It's a lot of work, for nothing

because it's not a very good idea.

actually there is a way to do it that makes it very productive

the new SVT lightning concept uses something they call "super cooler technology"

It uses the cars air conditioning to provide a i believe 50 hp increase for 45 seconds. Then it takes i think 5 minutes to re-charge.

When i used to work for ford i knew alot about it, but i have since forgotten alotta it. But research it, u'll find out more. But i do know that they said it was run off the car's a/c

Scroll down to the bottom of the page.. where it has the cooler technology! (http://www.maximum-cars.com/Cars/Car.php?carnumber=418)

Yeah dude, but that is cooling the coolant for the intercooler, big big difference compared leaving your AC on all the time to pump air into your intake. Pretty neat idea though!

P.S. Cyber, the amount of air your engine sucks in is WAY over what your A/C system puts out, if we wanted to hypothetically pretend this was a good idea to start with.
