hey guys, so i just got that dash install kit and a wiring connector harness to hook up my new cd player. the only thing is when i was at walmart all they had were install kits for GM cars 94 and up right? and i looked at the specifics on the back and it says for a 2000 alero; i have a 2001 and i was wondering if it makes any difference between one year or will it not fit?? Also, my player (clarion) didnt come with the wiring harness so i bough one as well which was for the 2000 alero. will these components still work??

I would get a Metra or an American International product.
2001 up has some issue with charms I guess...

makes a huge difference... 2001+ aleros had the door chimes and airbag controller built into the radio

Only the chimes are in the radio. It has noting to do with the airbags.

that would be pretty scary having you radio control you airbags.. haha

You need a special 100 dollar harness to retain full function.

I keep hearing mixed things. One of the reasons I think you need it is if it was just door chimes why would they make a relocation kit? Since it's not going to chime anyways with the speakers hooked up to the aftermarket.

The kit we are talking about lets you keep your chimes and not relocate your radio into your trunk. There for if he got the metra kit for his year Alero he would keep his chimes becuase the Metra kit has it built into the wiring.

Ahh okay. So what would be the difference between a Metra kit and a regular dash kit with the little speaker for the door chimes?
Also, why would the factory deck need to be relocated?

well like said i hate the door chimes anyways so no loss there. but it doesnt effect any of the gauges in the cluster like low tire pressure or anything right?

In the 2001+ Alero's theres some kind of device in the radio that controls the airbags and other things. You need to relocate the radio in the trunk to keep those functions.
Thats what Ive been told. But I also heard there was a way to avoid the relocation and still keep those. (Don't ask me I don't know  )

The plastic in dash thing(forgot what its called) that goes around the new radio and covers the gap will not fit the 2001. I bought it from wal-mart and it stated up to 2000, I thought it would still work but check out my cardomain on page 3 and you'll see pics of the fit.

Hmm... no one's really given me a for sure answer to my question. VinAlero was the closest and he described the airbags just as I did... but both of our thoughts are speculation.
Does anyone have an answer that can put this to end?

The relocation kit is intended more for the W-Body cars which you can do things like reset the oil life monitor and program your remotes right through the radio.

you need a different type of wiring harness. This specific harness costs $100. your door chimes and lights and ceiling light are all connected to your cd player so when you replace it you need a special wiring harness.

hey can anyone help me out here? i just started putting evrything in today and like the harness i bought hooks up fine from the car to the cd players harnes but it doesnt power on. it makes noise when you push the open button on the player but thats it. so like some of you were saying that i hd to get a special harness to get all the power back as in door chimes and overhead light but i thought this one would still work. so i had a guy at Nielson's look at it and he said i had to but the "little black box" which is the harness that give all the power back to the door chimes and overhead light and accessory wire which is $100! i really dont care to pay that much!! any help please????

lol well i think it's required... if you can find the box on ebay or someone that has one for sale that'll be the cheapest way.

You can also run your own ignition wire to the radio as well.
