un screw it then put your new one in and screw it back in. :P
i've changed an alternator once, not on an alero, but it was super easy.

Heres the steps from ehow, its pretty much universal for every car.

Things You'll Need
Box end wrench (size will vary depending on the make and model of your car)
Ratchet with appropriate size socket
Cresent wrench

The first thing you need to do is determine that the problem is actually being caused by the alternator, because if you're anything like me, it's always best to do the least amount of work possible. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before doing any electrical work on your vehicle

Once you have determined that the alternator is the likely culprit for your headlights dimming everytime the bass hits while jammin' to Rump Shaker, you will need to locate the alternator in your specific car (under the hood is likely in most cases). Sometimes it will be in plain sight, but there are some vehicles which require some searching. An automotive manual for your car is always handy.

Once you have located your alternator, the first thing you will need to do is remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pully.

Next, disconnect the ground cable, then hot wire from the alternator.

Once all of the wires have been diconnected, there should be two mounting bolts (one on the top and one on the bottom). Loosen and remove these and the alternator should drop right out. It's usually a good idea to take your alternator into your local automotive supply store to have it tested (most will do this for free). This will either give you assurance that you have correctly diagnosed the problem, or crush your spirit because it will be verified that there is a larger issue with your car than you thought.

Then just do the same to install a new one.

^ its right on top on a 2.4
no pics really, but i'll try to explain
1) disconnect a battery cable from battery, doesn't matter if its + or -
2) unhook bat. cable from alternator
3) take off the three (i think) nuts that hold the alternator down
4) lift it out, reverse order to put new one in.
Not hard to do. its about a 10 min. job, taking your time.

and do you know for sure if its your alternator? use a volt meter to check your bat. voltage with the car off, remember it. start your car up and check the voltage, if its higher its not your alternator.

its pretty easy, I suggest getting some extensions for the job to make it easier. The only hard part would be getting the belt back on but really its pretty simple, just a few bolts.

2 bolts down from the top and one below the alt and then belt. 15mm wrench, and either 15mm or 18mm socket will need deep wall with extension.
