View Full Version : 350Z Calipers on a Alero?

Okay this thread may have the effect to raise eyebrows, but today @ work I was working on a 350Z. As I finished doing the oil change on the beauty I began to adjust the psi on the tires and I noticed the calipers. I observed them for a few seconds and began to see similiar characteristics as our Alero calipers. I could not see behind the calipers and how they bolt on due to the massive 20's. Now does anyone have a clue if the swap is possible or maybe if the Brembo brakes available for the Z can fit the Alero? I know a bit off in the clouds yet I must know. thank you

best way to find out, is go to AutoZone and get a caliper and try to put them on your alero. If they dont fit, take em back.

im leanign towards no although GM and nissan have shared ideas before im leaning towards a big no. if you want a cheap conversion swap to the corvette dual pistons in the front from a C5

From the factory they're alright, but not amazing. It's more the Z car history and overall potential of the car that makes it one of those cars people make a big deal about.

As for the brakes, I don't know if swapping to the Z's non-Brembos will improve braking that much over the stock Alero brakes. They're single piston calipers just like ours. The Brembos on the other hand would be well worth it if you could get it to fit. I've driven a 350Z with the Brembos. You could just barely tap the brake pedal it'll just about throw you through the windshield if you're not wearing a seat belt. Those brakes were amazing!

Some 350Z owners make their oil change at Wal Mart?

You'd probably have an easier time getting CTS-V calipers to fit. There's a few different mountings for the brembo calipers, but they would most all require an adapter bracket.

Yeah i know but i took good care of it. That same day we had a guy take in is early corvette and only put conventional penz 10w30 that we carry in bulk. the cam housings were leaking oil though, i cleaned up one of them

it's really easy to do. However stock Alero 16" wheels will not fit back on the car.

how much was the difference from stock calipers to the corvette dual pistons? and i assume 17"s will fit right?

Wel I need to do that swap to because the braking right know is horrible. But my only prob is that I would need some new rims and I cant use sliks any more because they come in 16" only.

I have 18's so thats not an issue. Now it didnt list a description in detail as far as what year corvette to get the calipers from and is there any modification to be done or is it a direct fit? thankz guyz

Well, it's not that they won't fit with 16s. They just won't fit with stock Alero 16s... I believe many aftermarket wheels and i think the stock W-Body wheels fit.

Calipers - Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillac XLR 1997-Current (I'm sure there's other PBR calipers that work too like the GXP and GTO)

Caliper Brackets, Hardware and Pads - Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird 1998-2002

Brake Rotors - Chervrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, 1998-2002 - Chevrolet Impala, MonteCarlo 2000-2005

You can get the calipers without the logo in red or yellow from autozone for under $100/pr as long as they can still get them. I don't remember the part number off hand though.

LOL, well that's not exactly true. But they look the same from 10 feet away.

My wheels actually came off a Cadillac CTS. They are polished smooth everywhere and coated. The real Aurora final 500 wheels are a little rough on the insides and they're not coated. Same casting and they're supposed to be interchangeable though...

They just have to be the fitment for one of those cars (they're all the same 12" rotor). Mine are drilled and slotted Baer rotors.

I'm working on a way to possibly use the corvette/camaro rear brakes too, but haven't gotten that far yet. it's a little more involved than this front setup. If you already have rear discs it probably won't make that big of a difference. But they sure will look nice with 12" rear rotors too.

shiiiiiiit, i was just reading the dudes instructions for putting the corvette rotors and calipers on.....i forgot to torque the bolts on the caliper...lol, does that really matter? i mean i tightened them pretty good, just didnt torque em

Cliff8928
08-06-2007, 12:19 PM
Well, there's a specified torque for most of the fasteners on the car that nobody ever follows. I doubt dealer mechanics torque the caliper bolts either.

Not necessarily. It would be a way to sort of advertise that your car has upgraded brakes. A lot of VW drivers use Porsche brakes and keep the "Porsche" text on the side of the caliper, even though it's on a VW. Then again, they're also Brembo calipers...

Satsuriku
08-12-2007, 03:54 PM
hell i would keep the corvette lettering on the side of tha caliper. who the hell would suspect a car like an alero can use the same calipers of a vette!!

alerored04

ditto. I think it would look awesome to have some massive calipers on there that read corvette.

DOHC_tuner

yeah i wouldnt mine leaving the corvetter letters

Cliff8928
08-12-2007, 10:56 PM
I opted to get the calipers without the lettering. It wasn't really going to fit in with the style i was going for. Also, I don't really want my Olds to say "Corvette". When I do a similar brake upgrade to my Chevy, then I'll us the real Corvette ones.

meh its not so bad, shows that youve done your research and now how to spend money.

lots of the vw and audi guys have calipers that say porsche

AJules
12-18-2007, 02:32 PM
okay, sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead but it's not really necessary to open a whole new one

so everything i'd need if i want to do the corvette brake upgrade is

1. 97-04 Corvette or XLR Calipers
2. 98-02 Camaro or Firebird Caliper Brackets
3. 98-02 Camaro Impala or Firebird Brake Pads
4. 98-02 Camaro Firebird or Impala Rotors

and it would cost a total of around how much?

Cliff8928
12-19-2007, 01:42 AM
The calipers can actually be 97-current

The pads are from the 98-02 Camaro or firebird ONLY

The rotors are 99-02 Camaro/Firebird or '00-'05 Impala or Monte Carlo (also tons of other cars used them like Auroras, Intrigues, Buicks, Cadillacs etc..)

i believe thats right

Cliff8928

C6 and XLR calipers are identical aside from the logo, C5 ones are slightly different.

I believe you can use the F-Body calipers if you want your stock wheels to fit. Then again, that's no guarantee.

There's also the option of using the 12" rotor and then using the bracket and single piston cast-iron caliper from the Impala/monte. Requires drilling the holes in the knuckle to 14mm and a new banjo bolt for the caliper, but other than that it's the same installation.

Do you mean new Banjo bolt as compared to the original Alero bolt? My calipers came with the bolts (used).
I didn't have a 14mm drill bit (had a brain fart and forgot my bits only went to 1/2" (approx 13mm), so I used a die grinder with a straight cut bit and a file to open the holes.
I really wish I could have found the calpier mounts back then and wouldn't need to drill out the holes.

Maybe not as tall as a C5, but they're IDENTICAL to a C6.

Yeah, the cast iron calipers have a more coarse thread on the banjo bolt.
