is it possible (and easy) to swap the (LQ1) 3.4L DOHC 60 degree V6 from the old oldsmobile cutlasses into an alero that has the 3400 sfi? whats the differences in the engines other than the 3.4 had 215 hp and the 3400 has 175 hp? i don't get why they made the 3400's (a newer engine) with less power.

you answered your own question. the 3.4 is a dual overhead cam motor while the 3400 is a pushrod engine. The swap is definately not worth the time.

They can be fast and all. But the 3.4 DOHC is not a very good designed engine. It was *basically* a set of DOHC heads retrofitted onto a pushrod block. The engine is MASSIVE for what it is.

I had one in my 1995 Monte Carlo Z34. Good motor and fairly fast for a heavy car.
Towards the end it had a few quirks like I would let off the gas and it wanted to keep on doing what it was doing...
Also the Cam belts/pulley's were due for a change, which isnt cheap. It was noisey also. Very hard to work on, mechanic rapage!

sooo.....i did a little reading up on it and the 3400 is a better built engine than the DOHC. but, why is my engine so noisy then? i mean 95K isn't all that many miles in today's standards and my car sounds like its about to fall apart when I start it. i always blamed it on being a DOHC because they're known for being noisy. I'd like to learn how to do an engine overhaul but I was planning on learning on a project car, not an alero.

because our engines are based off early 80's engine design......Ever wonder why we have suck poor HP for the engine size and gas mileage?
