View Full Version : glassing door panels
so anyway i sort of got myself into a big project...been glassing my door panels. lot of work, messy as fack and the weather hasnt been great so drying time is longer then normal. anyway i glassed the first door panel and am waiting for it to dry now. heres a couple of pictures. richie said to give it a day or two to fully cure so im gonna go out and get fucked up for my birthday and worry about it another day lol.
PS: i would not suggest being an idiot like me and start a big fiberglassing project without any experience whatsoever.

nice so has it been raining there that will kill cure time. i hae the auto loc kit and a solinoid busted so id say go with spal.
yes its been around 50 degrees and raining, so its cold in the garage and im sure the moisture isnt helping either

yeah i always kill it with a lot of the hardner it will get so freakin hot i dont like to wait
i put too much on one of the batches i made and i ended up wasting like 2oz of resin because it hardened so fast.

Oh, how I love FG'ing parts... can't wait to start the interior pieces for the rear...
looking good though.
its not too bad once you get the hang of it, its just hard on the door panels at the top with all the curves to get out the damn airbubbles, hoping the dash will be alot easier

What type of FG are you using? The hair or the woven?
polyester resin with chopmat

I might need help if I ever get to fiberglassing pieces of my interior....
I'm thinking of just recovering it... I'll probably need some advice from you, eh_nigma.

matt is the easiest then use hair for extra strength for the holes
damn im wainting to go start workin again heh
i heard you use cloth for smoother surfaces, and it is generally stronger, but the door panels are very curvy and thus you use mat, whatever it seems to be stong with the mat and ive been following what richie has told me

50 bucks wont even cover the beer drank will makin
lol i spent like $50 on resin for this door panel, im ordering online now to save money, but i used just under 2 quarts of resin for one door panel = mucho $$$, its going to look sort of like what richie has with a few tweaks (going to look like its all one piece)

how did u like strpping the leather off i just sprayed it with paint stripper and it came off just by taking a knife and plling up. i ried just using a razor blade but gave up after an hr
well i used a flathead screwdriver for most of it, after about 2 hours of that i went out and bought a dremel, finshed the other half of the door panel in about 20minutes

you know paint stripper will distort the plastic and eat it up too right?
Laq. Thinner works just as good but won't eat the plastic.

not if the battery dies
you'll be stuck, the coat hanger won't do much when you have no handles for it to grab onto
pimpalero2003
11-01-2007, 07:59 PM
um yeah actully all u do is grab the cable its easy done it before
yea i think my 2 stinger SP1000s and my 2.0 cap are all going to die at the same time and not be able to power my door popper solenoid, maybe nextweek that will happen
pimpalero2003
11-02-2007, 02:03 AM
burn vin if u lose power with that ill laugh if i can get a cam ill show how easy it is to get in with poppers

haha.. i climbed out my ragtop a few times.. not besides of solenoids problems or dead battery.. but because i forget my remote/keys. I always leave my car door open in my garage, so i dont have to repop the door the next time. And a few times.. i run into the car then realize i don't have my remote/keys.

u need grammer punctation! the cheap switches works, u just need to put a relay on them or you'll fry the switch. no one sees me climbing out cuz i'm in my own garage anyways and it in a back alley way. My neighborhood isn't front of the house driveways.

11-02-2007, 05:25 PM
ahh haha sry rich im on a phone remember hell those other switches are like 7 bucks and no realy and have messed up yet
well anyway today i bondoed the door just thought i would throw up a few pics of it, tommorow is a long session of sanding, and i still have a spot of two that i need to build up a little more bondo to

Couln't you have put on lighter coats of bondo? That's an insane amount of bondo.
And for God sake, cover everything else in your garage or you will be cleaning for the next year.
its kind of hard when you need to build up like 1/4 inch with the bondo to make it flush where the map pockets were lol

for the litte pinholes that ull most likelty have get some spot filler works just like bondo minus u can use very very little or it wont set up and dont have to mix it
volfenhag_alero
11-08-2007, 02:02 PM
Just get a High Build Primer and some MEKP and when you prime you door panel it will fill all of the pinholes and give you a smooth surface to paint on.
i have icing that im going to use after im done with the bondo....

Awesome job, this is your first time with fiberglass, right? I'm impressed.
Did you use Bondo brand body filler? I've heard that stuff shrinks a lot as it hardens and cracks, that's why I guess Rage Gold is better, idk. Did it give you any problems like that?
yes this is my first time with fiberglass and bondo, i guess its coming along, ive learned alot from this first door panel and the rest of them should be a lot easier, here the sanded door, with a few craters left to sand out and still spots where the factory carpet was that needs to be built up a little bit.
