GM crap (the fuel pumps are)

Driving home from work and being awake for going on 26 hours (every Monday) at 12:15 pm and I stop at a light. I start to go from the light, the car goes fine and then starts bucking a bit.

I'm like WTF? and then it backfires. I look at the a/f gauge and it's blank. Shit the motor is starved for fuel.

I drive for about 2 blocks thinking it will pass by and it's not, so I pull off onto a side street and slow to a stop, just before a complete stop, the car dies. I try to restart it with no avial.

So long story short, I have the car towed to my mech. He tests the fuel pump. (Turned the car "ON" and wacked the fuel tank with a ballpene hammer) and it started right up.

This is fuel pump number 4, it seems to go every 2 years or so, and the car is progressively getting drivin less on it every year.

There's another $500 I don't have :(

O yeah BTW, I'm not getting rid of the car ;)

Ken go with a walbro pump it is much cheaper than a GM pump. you still have the install cost but part price is half.

what is funny is i still have the original pump in my car.

I had to replace mine a few months ago, came in for $800 after labor but I had them do a complete tune-up on the car so it was probly less for just the pump. Is this a common problem on our cars? my dads grand am is 2 years older and 30,000 miles more than my car and hes still on his origional.

Dont let ur tank get low and the fuel pump will never go bad. The fuel pump is cooled by the gas. I never let my tank get more than 1/4 low. Before i used to get my low fuel light come on all the time before i fill up and i burned through a fuel pump at 78k miles.

My parents car ('96 old 88 w/ 80k miles and a '97 lincoln towncar w/105k miles) never had any fuel pump replacement due to my dad never lets the tank get below 1/2 before fill up.

Yeah... 118k miles and no problem with the pump. My ex used to yell at me for driving it below 1/4 tank.

Honestly? I had one hitch with it. I bought wynn's Fuel system treatment at wal-mart, And it purrs like a puppy ever since.

Mind you, the one time i had trouble some guy was under my car before i knew what was happening, told me to get in and turn the key, did it. and away it went.

Well if gas wasn't so expensive I wouldnt have that problem, I regulary drive under 1/2 a tank.

Got the car back last night, running good and only $539 later :(

But on the plus side, my mech gave me an old OBDII scaner, worth about $300. He didn't need it becuase he's got one of the big Snap-on Scanners :D

seriously Ken, you should have done the Walbro pump it is like $120-$150 approx. and much better. i know the factory replacement pumps are like $230-$280 so there is a big savings. So why not upgrade to 225gph for cheaper.

yeh wow at least he didnt rape u.. i ran a quick estimate on my On Demand program here at work and it was just a touch over 500.

Thats cool about the scanner though.. we have 3 or 4 here i think. The Tech II is the bomb tho. we dont have to send things to get reprogrammed to the stealership anymore.. we do it all ourselves. We can do anything a dealership can now and that saves us a LOT of time and money bc they are so hard to work with!!!

garts

ken did you ever think your burning out fuel pumps cause your pump is being stressed out by some other reason? other than the "below 1/4 monkey shit"

i mean just a hunch. alot of people seem to be doing fine. hell maybe with the dhp in your car it might be hurting you in the long run you never know. or maybe your Fuel pressure is too high or low.......j/w

other than your car just dying, what are some signs of a fuel pump going bad? for like the last few weeks, my gas gauge will say i have 3/4 of a tank then i'll look and it'll say 1/2 a tank. this morning it was visibly moving from 3/4 tank to 1/4 tank and I don't know whats going on

My MasterTech is $3-4k. You can get cheapie OBDII at Murray's for $99. It depends on the features and what it can do.
