have a 01 alero. crutchfield only shows a few cheaper headunits that fit as a replacement. i'm interested in a pioneer DEH-P6900UB. i've gone thru the threads on aftermarket units and don't see anything on sizes.
also, i have the monsoon amp in the trunk. both rear 6x9's are blown. i assume it's best to just ditch the oem speakers/monsoon and re-wire everything from scratch? i have a single RF punch 12" sub in the trunk with alpine mrp-m350 amp, would like to replace with a larger amp and two 12"s...
also with the 6x9's - what works back there while retaining the stock grille?
i know i need the data-ii cable, etc.
any advice is most appreciated.

most decks will fit there hard plastic behind the fact deck to hold it dremel it out or break it out as for speakers the factorys are 2 omh so youll lose some power

I run that head unit in my '00 ho, fits fine, of course I had to cut this plastic thing that sticks out in the back of the car's mount so the RCAs could allow the headunit it to slide all the way back, but it was really no big deal. You most likely will need an antenna adapter which is real cheap at Wal-Mart.
As far as the back 6x9s, I would leave the stock amp (if you aren't planning on upgrading to an after market amp for them). Replace the 6x9s to the ones you like most. I have JL-TR 6x9s in the stock mounts and there is plenty of clearance between the stock grill and the top of the speaker.
If you need anymore help, just ask :)

i see wiring info on the monsoon system, but all it talks about is output. do i need not worry about input on this, so as long as i use the data ii wiring harness adapter to go from the new unit to the stock harness?

It should work just by using the adapter.

I hear from an Installer friend that anytime an Alero comes into the bay they cut the plastic in the back out. So its common practice.
Makes sense, cut it out right away so you dont have to deal with it when you find out it doesnt fit the hard way.

My Park Avenue had plastic crap back there, just like the Alero. It was removed forcefully with a pliers and snippers :]

Its where the stock radio rear mounts. You will notice a pointed object on the back of the stock radio.
