View Full Version : Does this sound like an injector problem?

Ever since I broke my foot a while back and the Alero sat for 4 weeks, I've been having problems starting it. Sometimes I will try to start from a cold start and it will take 2 cranks of the key before it will turn over, but only sometimes. Now if I park the car, go in a store, and come out in less than 5 mintues I have a hell of a hard time starting it up.
I bought some injector cleaner at NAPA call "Cleen" It's pretty good stuff, it helped the Delta out big time with the 307. When I came out of the store, I cranked it something like 5 or 6 times before it turned over. On the 2nd attepmt it tried to turn over, sputtered, and died out.
I'm thikning there is still some crap in the tank from sitting for the 4 weeks. It did crank well, so I doubt it's the starter, but it's getting worse with the less gas in the tank, right now it's around 1/2 a tank.
New fuel pump in November, and new fuel filter every July ;)

Could be injectors - cleaner always helps. Could be throttle plate is covered in goo. That was the case with mine, cleaning it off helps a lot with hot re-starts. I don't think it's hard to do, since a co-worker went out in the parking lot at lunch and did it for me as a birthday present.

^^ OK I'll try that too.
That's not hard at all, the hardest part is taking off the intake

I store my car for the winter and mine sits longer than that at times and it starts no problem. If I'm ambitious, I'll start it about once a month. But in either case, I've never had a problem.

might be injectors or something, but my car sat about one and a half months not being started this summer and in cranked right up when i went to it.

just throwing this out here but do you still have an EGR? Just tossing it out there cause my old ho had a hard time starting sometimes and I just lived with it untill it started to run like crap then I had the injectors flushed, cleaned the TB and still ran and started like crap. Then I changed the EGR valve and all those problems dissapered.

ok... how do you clean the throttle plate? mines been starting hard since the day i got it (starter sounds just fine) and its annoys me. so i figure i'll start taking small steps diagnosing the real issue...

I'm guessing TB cleaner would be the easiest?

I'm pretty sure it has an EGR. I think they came out 1/2 way in the 2000 model year. I'll have to take a look at that.
A guy in work was telling me he had the same problem with his Chevy truck, another Chevy truck, a Buick Retteia (sp) and another guy has the problem with a Lumina, 96 I think.
Turned out it was the fuel pump relay going bad, $10 fix ;)

Fuel pump relay, not the problem
Fuel pump fuse, not the problem
dirty TB plate, not the problem
Filled up tonight and dumped in injector cleaner, then drove the car 2 miles to work. Better accel, but didn't try to restart the car.
going to the shop Friday, I can't figure it out. Is it a possible security mod.? I would think it wouldn't start at all, at least for 10 mintues. No flashing security light

Now hold dont kill me if this is stupid cuz im still learning. If u getting fuel, and everything that has to d with fuel has been replaced or checked dosent that bring us to ignition issues?

Air + fuel + spark = ignition. If you rule out one, look at the other two.

Or air. ;) Too rich or too lean and it won't ignite.

my battery went dead after sitting for 2 weeks. it was my volt gauge i think. I have it hooked up direct to the hot on the alt. i guess im going to have to put a relay in.

Man u kno Vtak in teh v6 is teh sheit.
I had a similar problem with my '87 Olds Toronado and it was the water(coolant) temp sensor. Of course you need to grab a multimeter and check it first. The problem is obviously in the cooling system. I'm sure the computer stored an error code for that specially if you had this problem several times. It would really help to mention how many cylinders your car has when you post a fuel injector related problem. It helps a lot.
