View Full Version : Tire Question

I need to put new tires on my '00 GL w/16" wheels. The car has a set of Falken Z-rated tires (factory size 225-50/16). I really don't see the need for a Z-rated or even a V-rated tire on this car. I doubt the car will ever be driven over 100 miles an hour. I'm looking to pay around $80 a tire and I really would like a touring tire with an H rating so I don't run into same noise problems that the current tires have. A touring tire would also have a longer tread life.

So here's my question. I found a decent tire for that price but the size is 205-55/16. Is anyone running this size tire? I looked at the two sizes right next to each other and they look to be the same diameter. The 55 series tire is just a tad narrower than the 50 series tire. I know I'm being cheap but this is just a work car to me. I have another car for carving up the road with so offer up your opinoins please.

225 - 225 mm width of tire
so there is a 20 mm reduction in your tire width, not good imo

but since this is a work car to you it shouldnt matter
what car do you use to carve up the roads
im riding 215 60 15, which came stock, and i have no complaints daily driving

edit:btw im not sure if 205 would work with 225 stock, you'll have to ask others that have that tire on here

As long as the 225 and 205 tires are the same diameter, the speedometer will read correctly and you'll be fine. The narrower tires will handle better through the snow too.

I'm pretty sure 205 is too small for the stock rim size.

Some guys run 235 and 245 on thier cars, however 245's may rub and both throw off the speedo.

Check out www.tirerack.com (http://www.aleromod.com/forums/www.tirerack.com) even if you don't buy tires there, they have an entire specs section on each brand of tire they sell. It will tell you how many revs per mile the tire does (which is what the speed sensor reads) and what size fits on what rims ;)

205 is fine for a 6.5" wide wheel.

Thanks for all of the great responses folks. Sounds like they will work fine and I see that a couple of you are actually running that size. That helps to reassure me. What width are the stock 16" rims anyhow?

Here's the other car the I use when I feel like tearing up the local roadways...

450 whp? You might have a slight advantage considering that you're probably lighter than me. I'm at 330rwhp right now. I might be able to get you off the line since I'm RWD and you are FWD, but I don't know with that much hp. It would be fun though. What do you run in the 1/4?

i just got a set of goodyear tripple tread in 235/50/16
best tire ive ever had, if you do a lot of driving in the rain these are a great set.
I like the wider tire, saves the rims from curb rash.....

Well, after a trip to the local Goodyear shop for an alignment. The guy there cut me a deal on tires and an alignment. I ended up with a stock size set after all. 225-50/16 Nexen V-rated tires. The guy assured me that they would not make nearly the noise that my current tires were making and he pretty much matched the price of the other tires that I was considering. Can't beat that I guess. The tread pattern looks more like a touring tire than a performance model. So the Alero now tracks nice and straight and is much quieter to boot.

Now I'm waiting for something else to go south. She just turned 103k today and I think I hear the CV axle on the RH side clicking. That should be a fun install. Thanks again for the suggestions and the compliments on the goat.

Quick question to you. When is it that you hear the click? I have been hearing a clicking noise when I turn my car so Im wondering if thats the same problem I have if so what parts do I need and how much of a pain is it to install?

heh he hasn't been to the track but it's guesstimated mid 13s. why'd you say 450whp? i'm confused, especially if you go on later to say you have 330.

horsepower's nothing. it's track time that means anything.

our race kart at LTU has 95 HP. it runs 9 second quarter miles and is very unsafe LOL (only weighs 400-450 lbs)

You're right. Track times matter more than anything. The best I've run in my car (the GTO) is 13.75, but that was before my headers and the handheld tune. The car was 276 at the wheels then, so now I'm guessing that I would be mid to low 13's now. That's if I can launch it correctly.

450whp is a lot of HP to me. I would guess he would have serious traction issues with that much. After he got going though, that thing would be hell on wheels. Sounds like a fun race to me.

Oh now I see where you got 450whp, from his sig. He doesn't have 450whp yet, LOL, that's his plans. Right now he's got the LD9, not the Ecotec. A guy named Spyhunter had 432whp running 12s no problem.

My new engine will be 450whp. At 330whp, you'll probably take me. As far as getting me off the line, I bet we'd be even or I would even take you by half a car, even being FWD I can launch this car pretty freakin hard and it just hooks and goes. Might be a decent race though...GTO's are pigs :p

Yea that's true, she's a heavy pig, but she sounds real good and cruises down the road quite nicely. If you can lauch really hard you'd probably pull me. I've only raced it with street tires. Hopefully I'll get some drag radials this year and give it another shot.
