so i went to get my yearly inspection done and i have a bad outer tie rod. to get it fixed is goinna be in the neighborhood of $175. that pays for the part, labor and up to a 4 way alignment. i have no choice but to get it fixed tomorrow as the sticker expires tonight. i only have 50000 miles on my car. has anyone else expeirienced a tie rod problem?

I had a bad one at around 56000. The shop that put my rims on noticed it and charge me $100 parts and everything but they didn't have to charge me for an alignment because I was already getting one with the new tires. So I guess $175 sounds about right to me with an alignment and all.

Yeah, mine BROKE. I ended up spinning off road and nearly flipping. Snapped the passenger side front wheel and all the suspension off. Having a tie rod break is definantly not a good thing.

Not the entire tie rod, but I had to replace a sloppy tie rod end about 5000 miles ago.

I had a cracked one back in May, and got it replaced. that was at about 38000 miles.

Symptoms:
hard to notice when you're driving. The easiest way to know if there's something wrong with it is to put it up on a lift and see if there's any give to it. (If you can wiggle the wheel mor than 1/8 of an inch with your hands, you got a problem)

The guy at Firestone had my car up for an oil change (this particular garage bay had no pit). He must have noticed that the wheel gave a little when he brushed by it when he went under my car to get the oil filter. He brought me under the car and showed me the crack, and he compared the good tie rod (driver side) to the cracked one. The driver side one was firm, passenger side gave about an inch.

smokinAMD told us the consequences of putting that off. This is a part that if you crack it, and can still drive on it, it is VERY WORTH IT to get it fixed immediately. I'm not sure if it was smokinAMD or someone else who posted the pics of their incident when the tie rod broke. It turned out that the car almost flipped but the tire gripped on the ground at an angle that the other 3 tires weren't going (BAD) and ripped out the suspension. wheel was hanging on for dear life by the brake line.

Yep, that was me. That wasn't fun at all. Nice $2700 in damage too.

I'm really lucky the airbags didn't blow, although, I'm suprised they didn't. I hit the ground hard as hell, hard enough to break my seat. The only body damage I had was that stupid black thing up front and the side skirt after the wheel slammed back into it.

I should have taken a picture of the speedometer after I came to a rest, since no power was going to the good wheel and it was all going to the one that snapped off, the speedometer said 135mph.

dash and steering wheel airbags are only set to pop with a head-on collision. My airbags didn't pop for my collision, and all my damage was on the front too.

well i am glad i got mine fixed this morning before something like that happened to me. all told it was $212. they charged me $75 for the alignment! the inspection itself was $40. im golad i only got to do that once a year. oh and it was an extra ten dollars because my windows are tinted. wtf, that is ridiculous. anyways, i am glad to hear that i am not the only one to experience this problem.

I'll throw my two cents in....

I had to replace my right tied rod at about 40,000 and then the left at about 50,000. The tech I spoke to said that tie rod problems are common on the aleros.... <_<
