I own a nice 2000 Alero. Haven't had any problems until last week, when she hit me twice. Driving down the road..she just quits. No lights no warning..nothing. Let her sit for a few minutes drove 500 feet..again dies. Had her towed to my mechanic. He replaced fuel filter..went to drive her home..not more than five miles..she quit AGAIN!!
Had to have her towed once again back to my mechanic. He installed new vacuum lines..let her run in his lot for an hour..prrd beautiful. Took her for a test drive not more than five miles and HE had to get towed back to his garage. He is stumped. Told us to take it to a dealer. It is now sitting at the dealer and they ran all kinds of diagnostic tests and the only thing they said was that it's pushing out to much fuel pressure ..80 compared to a normal 50 or so they say. They say they think it might be the fuel pump, but they aren't even sure..and at the cost of over $700.00 they can't even guarantee that that's it. Does ANYBODY have any suggestions what this could be?

first off your lucky the mechanic didnt scam you and continue to charge all this things that had nothing to do with it. Just drop the tank yourself and replace that pump.

It may not even be the pump but it could be.

Let me ask you this ... do you have anything hanging on your keychain other than the 2 Alero keys and / or the remote?

I have a cloth dreamcatcher key ring and my supermarket quick pass cards and my house keys.

charley's got a point....your ignition lock cylinder could be warn, and with all the extra weight of all of those things on your keychain (it may not be much but just enough) would jiggle something lose when you go over a bump no matter how small it could be and shut your car down....did you hit a bump when your car quit?

I'm a firm believer in having few keys on the car key chain...I only have one car key, the keyless fob, and my house key and thats it.

When my car died, I was just driving along on a straight interstate. Wouldn't the weight of the key chain caused a problem before this or while it was idling in my mechanics garage?

I have 108800 miles on my car with the key ignition that came in the car when I bought it new and have never had a problem with. I have had all this on my key chain since I have owned it.

I have researched a fuel pressure regulator, where would that be located and could that be a problem or a fuel pump check valve? My dealer said he would do more diagnostics on it tomorrow, but he says they're all running clean..I don't want to lose my Alero. Before she completely shuts down..there were only two warning lights that came on..usually it lights up like an airplane cockpit when she stalls and when I put my foot on the gas pedal it felt like I was stepping on a damn marshmallow..before she finally quit.

The fuel regulator is on the fuel rail by the throttle body asuming you have the 3400. They did have a recall on the fuel regulator on the 2000 alero so if they give you a new one make sure they don't charge you for it.

No I have a 2.2 Twin Cam..well we'll see what the dealer says tomorrow. If push comes to shove, I guess I'll have to fork out the cash because I'm to damn dumb to replace it myself and I don't want just anyone replacing it..so an Olds mechanic should know his stuff, don't you think?

Well yeah I know they know but for them to know and you not knowing is going to cost you a lot of money. Buy the Haynes manual and change it yourself.

I mentioned the keys because I have a '99 Alero (just one year older than yours) and with more than just the keys & fob, this will happen to my Alero. I wouldn't have to hit anoticeable bump for this to happen. And with just the keys, I can wiggle the key with the car running and it will sometimes shut off the engine. You might mention this to the mechanic.
