I need to replace only two of my tires(so my mechanic says). He is trying to save me money by just buying two, but isn't better to buy all 4?

Not really as it just depends on the case. As an example, all of my cars before the Alero were high performance RWDs and consequently, the rear tires often wore out before the front tires. So, I would buy 2 tires at the time, have the old front tires moved to the rear, and the new ones installed on the front. With the Alero, I would not do that (nor the opposite way around) because you want your best tires (new in this case) on the wheels that steer. With our cars, the wheels that steer and the wheels that motivate are the same. So, any (2) new tires I would buy for the Alero would go on the front and the (2) older tires would go on the rear as long as they are still in good shape with enough tread to be safe to use. The most inportant thing is that the 2 tires on the front (or the rear) wheels be the same type, size, & tread design.

Yeah like Charley said, you don't need to to buy all four new if you don't need to.
