I have seen a few aftermarket DD's and personally I think they're kinda ugly. I been looking at stereo stuff last week cause of my rear 6x9s. Then again it's all about personal taste. I like the stock look myself but many people prefer aftermarket.

Hey,
LOL whatever it's called freedom of speech as far as I know we still live in a democratic society. The first one sticks out like half an inch and the second one just looks wierd because it's not flush. I said no offense and gave my personal opinion on the install......no need for personal attacks there hun.

Even with it missing a trim piece or sticking out a little, still beats the hell out of the ugly stock radio.

ryan, it does look like shit. its sticking out like 3/16ths of an inch :rolleyes2:
i'll update this one in a bit with a pic of mine.... (single din)
Update:
also, ryan, whats soo good about those? for that kinda price, it better cook me meals and keep the whole interior spotless. (doesn't look like it has lcd/navigation/etc fancy features of other high price point headunits) besides looking old fashioned, which i don't care for at all.
Ryan from Ohio
05-17-2008, 09:38 PM
Thats the 406... Thats not 1/4 the head unit the 4000 is...
The 4000 strangely enough run about $3200-$4K+ depending on the shop and if they wanted to deal. Oh ya, and that price was in 1996. Adjust for inflation... Were talking about a $6K+ CD deck.
And my friends... If you ever have a chance at a 4000 combo and you have some interest, do NOT hesitate.

so it has a digital out (sweet!) and 8V preouts. thats the only "flashy" (pricey) options i see there.
unless it said it has a cd changer in it? either that or it CAN control one. but for 2k, it better have one.
lonnie
05-17-2008, 11:33 PM
The fiber out is sweet, and the this thing is loaded with rca outputs. 2 rca inputs, and the PLL (Phase Lock Loop) tuning circuity should make for pretty noise free operation. To rich for my blood though

Not going anywhere near the $4,000 for that deck opionion long as you like it and can afford it :<) As for installs not sure what there is available out there that would look more of a stock installation. I think the stock one looks way cleaner then anything I have seen in here so far. Is it as good obviously not. Is there any kind of kit that would be as clean as stock look? That I would be interested in hearing.

While I was looking around wonder if that's as flush a fit as a stock unit.
As I side note I don't remember ever saying anyones shit sucked /shrug. Think I said install looks like shit. I guess I was kinda harsh but only an opinion they're like assholes everyone has one LOL. I probably should have said somthing along the lines of doesn't look as clean as stock /shrug live and learn.

^whats with the gap on the right side??
if you want it to look fancy and stock, you CAN pull the trim off and fiberglass a mount for it using the trim and a base plate, so it looks like its meant for that location.
or
do the "carputer" method and have a 7" touchscreen in place of the double din radio. we used to have several members w/ those but i think they've all moved on to bigger, better things. (other cars)
Ryan from Ohio
05-18-2008, 08:58 AM
Our lovely cars trim ring sucks. Its angled and curved... Unless your unit sites perectly flush and fills the entire holes theres going to be a gap (double din). Single dins are always going to have the fit kits.
A member on my board worked at a place selling McIntosh during the hay days (back in early/mids 90's). He said the 4000 combo was going from about $3,200-4K. But he lives in a rich area... so who knows.
Theres little info out there on it, and even less on how it operates and such. Just the other day an MX4000 was on E bay. Went for $300. Just didnt have the MDA4000 with it, making the MX useless...
With Head Units its all about design circuitry and processing.
Also note double dins are not very popular and there really isnt any "good" ones, IMO.
Get a decent head and get a good fit kit and be happy. I advise American international fit kits.

I have an AVIC D3 sitting around and it looks like it will fit the Alero just fine (there is a dash kit for the double-din size too.
My TNR definitely looks a bit bigger than the AVIC and it fits for the most part (the bottom right edge barely overlaps the display.

Yes new units have more features. That Mc doesnt have any "power".
What all new units lack is the sonic characteristics of the McIntosh. Theres not a single current newer head unit that can hold a candle or prayer up against an MX4000/MDA4000 combo. Unless you can get your paws on a Denon Z1, and even that may not be as good...

05-29-2008, 10:20 PM
the unit looks plain but has alot of stuff i have it connected to my phone i talk through my stereo wirelesly i have ipod connection which is controls my ipod instead of having to use my ipod to control it has a phenominal eq and sound aux hookup sattelite either sirius or xm amongst a ton of other stuff plus its very thin so the face doesnt stick out past the dash hard to tell in pics but its very clean and flush i know i coulda got a fancier screen but this had all the bells and whistles for sound and functioning so i gave on the looks part but i thought it fit decent not too much space around the edges which i feel is a issue with these damn aleros!!!

You don't need any fancy dancy stuff, just make sure you get the right size wire for the amperage that you are going to be running. I just don't believe in spending alot of money or wires and cabling, but if your in to looks be prepared to pay.
cherrington17
05-30-2008, 08:15 AM
also, for the clicking... i know if the mp3 player has any EQ settings, they need to be turned off. most of the time those interfere with the h.u's own eq settings, and it makes it sound like crap.

Actually I would use the extra space to put in a voltmeter gauge. I don't see any other place to put one and I usually just put them in with the radio circuit so it's even convenient. Having said that, I've got the OEM one in mine.
