Removing Shift Handle Knobs

Automatic Transmission: Look at the back of the shift knob. There is a little "staple-looking" clip that needs to be removed. Use a small screwdriver to pry it out. The knob then slides right off.

Manual Transmission: You have to cut it off.

errrr.. sorry nick, i'm a couple months slow getting back to you on this, but what he said.

You pull straight up on the knob and twist it back and forth.

It depends on what year you have. In 2002, or there abouts, they went to a different setup so they could be pulled off. I know my 2001 could NOT be pulled off.

Hey, Im having some trouble with this here. I have a 99 olds alero 4 door and Im looking for that little staple thing, but im not seeing it =/ I found a pic of one that looks just like myne if this helps at all.

on the side that faces in toward the cubby hole. (turn key to "on" and pull shifter back to drive 1 it'll be easier to see)

there should be a little gap about 3/4 of the way down from the top of the shifter. about 1/8" of an inch rectangle in the leather.... the staple is in there.

the bigger pain is getting back in the right spot.... its a female dog the first few times... but after you do i 100x or so.. its second nature.

yeah a small screwdriver is fine. i actually keep one in my car incase i need to do some center console rewiring on the fly... lol

Anyone have any ideas for making a new staple out of some metal...using something I can find in an average toolshed. I took my staple out a while ago and it fell...somewhere...between the seats and the arm rest. This is like something falling under a couch you can't reach under nor pick up.
