autozone/advanced auto sells the cheaper version that functionally does the same for like $20.
i'd go with that one.
unless you want to go all out and get autotap (or something similar) that'll connect to a computer and give you live info about your car... if your gonna spend a bunch of money, i'd go with the latter suggestion.

a guy i work with just got one similar to that, at a local place (i think advanced auto) and it looks similar to that, but has a small lcd readout for what kind of code it is, then gives the title for that code.
no reason to pay so much.. just look around and find the right cheap one.

there are a couple different ones
autozone sells pocket scanners and lcd readouts and also live data readouts all depending on how much you want to spend
pocket scanner = 79 to 89 dollars
lcd readout = 89 to 99
live data = 129 and up
pocket scanners only guive the code number then you have to look the number up in the book
lcd readout give code and def of that code no book nessicary
live data well does everything with car running gives all data like temp, rpm, etc etc

You might as well get the cheapest one available since there are some code that are manufacturer's specific. Because chances are you' going to come to the board and ask what P1113 - Manufacturer's control system is. That's if you comes across this code.

I have a Snap On scanner that does pretty much anything I want. The thing I like the most about it is it will pick a misfire even though the car isn't throwing a code. They aint cheap though.

I've never owned an OBD2 car before, but I would think I'd just want the codes and then look it up on the internet.
Either that or I'd want live data from a laptop. I'm not sure I'd want live data from a scanner unless it had a nice display.

ya i still havent scanned it yet been pretty busy and havent had the time to goto auto zone . i would just want a scanner that could work on all the cars we have rather then just one company. idk the lcd scanner would be more pracitcal then dragging my labtop into the parking lot of the apartment building

I was wondering if all OBD2 scanners work with antilock brakes. Supposedly to you bleed brakes the normal way, but at some point under certain circumstances, one does ues a scanner for something.

The better Actron ones have most of the code definitions in them, even the manufacturer specific ones.

Some have the code descriptions right on the screen, it's definitely more convenient. The live data is handy to detect faults too.

In most cases they don't.

If you see a deal on Gensis Pathfinder Set grab it. Live data feed, refreshes every .5 sec with 5 displays, Airbag, Traction system scan, system check ability.

I highly doubt an OTC Genisys is going to be that cheap...
I have a Actron CP1975 (http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16309) that I use. It's pretty good for the price and runs about $140. It can display live data from your PCM right on the screen. The only thing the more expensive Actron models have is graphing capability and OBD I support.
