View Full Version : Potential Ram Air Hood from Bodykits***REDO***

Oldsnut

I was talking with Jose Rivas and Aldo from Bodykits Etc. recently about making a mold of the Alero hood and producing a Ram Air hood. I know ther will never be any total agreement on a hood based on the other threads.
If Bodykits was willing to make a hood, would you be interested? Don't know a price yet. Just putting out feelers at this stage. I want to see how the kit turns out in the end. The guys at Bodykits are the best bet at getting this done.

DaRockwilder

I voted for three, but I'd like to make a suggestion, if I may.

If money was no object, I think it would be cool to do a W-30 style scoop on it. There are fiberglass versions available for, say, a 1970 Cutlass that would look pretty nice, but would be very custom, as you would have to hack the scoop off the W30 hood and graft it onto the Alero hood. Hence the "if money was no object" thing.

Really though, #3 isn't that far off from looking the same.

Ah, OK. Yeah an Alero has a lot more slope to the hood, so I guess by the time you hack up that W30 hood to match, you may was well have started from scratch anyway.

Right now Im working a few diffrent angels of the hood design, Im trying to keep the bulge from the ram air scoops low and smooth to keep in the orignal style of the stock hood.

I look at the grand am ram air and its to bulgey i think. The alero has a sleek look to it and I think to make the ram air flow nicely with the stock alero, it has to be smooth as well..

any opinions?

Midgear
07-27-2008, 11:26 PM
I dont know if this is going to help with the idea or not.. but it kinda makes sense to me.. Where the black lines are.. that'll be like the slant or the angle.. whatever you wanna call it.. the "dip" down where that particular part of the hood is lower than the rest to allow for air to flow directly into the scoops, rather than take a trip up over the hood and enter the scoop from the top- so basically from the opening of the scoop, and FORWARD, that particular area will be.. say.. an inch, mabey two inches lower than the rest of the hood? (the center of the hood staying at the original height)

I believe that was the original idea anyways- but, here we go.. (I need to invest in photo shop)

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w244/Midgear_album/aleromodfinish.jpg

EDIT: Either that^^ or its going to look somewhat like those white hoods that someone posted.. I like both ideas-

its the hood he wanted chopped onto the car, the view was diffrent and had the be warped onto the hood.

C2, heres a quick edit of the vents on a stockhood, rather than have the color off, i figured the stock hood with th vents will give a better idea.

you haveto look at the middel of the hood's height asapposed to the bottom of the front windshield...

sooo.. the air is sucked out from under the hood, like some sort of vacuum effect?

or does the air somehow manage a 180 turn and get shoved down into the engine bay-

hum, it would look to work in the same effect as a cowl induction hood, but i cant be to sure since I didnt design the cobra r hood.

so how does a cowl hood function.. lol forgive my retardation-

at least the cobra hood would help defrost your windshield in the winter...... lol j/k, I really like the hood with the vents that paulyb did on c2's car....

the heat extractor style on the supra pulls heat out as the air over the hood passes, makes like a vacuum effect

AlbinoMonkeyRat
11-04-2008, 08:54 PM

a functional cowl hood works by the drag sucked down and around under the back edge (cowl section) of the hood. and it would only help defrosting in the winter if it weren't blocked by the snow. :p

[ion] C2
11-04-2008, 08:57 PM
the high pressure air at the base of the windshield ends up going to the low pressure area that's under the hood

Midgear
11-04-2008, 10:36 PM
so the air makes a 180 degree turn from up over the hood and / or cowl and underneath it into the engine bay.. gotcha.

unless I get a body kit, im stickin with stock- and I seriously doubt im gonna be gettin a body kit anytime soon.

C2;400722']now if the heat extractor hood was body color with carbon fiber vents... that's exactly what i plan to do :)

i really like how those look... but i don't think you should do something like that if the car is ever going to see winter driving. something about the possibility of snow sitting in those vents scares me.

that much cold air, hitting that hot of the top of the engine... possibly cracking the metal.... yeah. bad times for everyone.

number 3... even though I can't tell if I like it for the hood or the paint job...

ram air is pointless, the only functional type of hood an alero could really use is a heat extractor, and even at that the only people that are going to notice the effects are the boosted ones.......

Well, does it help melt the snow off the windshield :ninja:

That second line in the Cobra R hood doesn't look that good on the Alero. Use the main raised section, proportion it a little better in the center around the headlights and it would be a winner. That's the one thing I didn't like about the original cowl hood. It was too square.

still toying with whether I'm building this one or not. I think going back stock looking sleeper is pointless for me at this juncture anyways....

When people can come to an agreement on a design then maybe. Right now I am trying to get the OSV kit shipped out.

that's mean a H. E. double hockey stick.

would those ports be open to the engine bay?

most certainly. I'm not a big fan of stuff being non-functional. that's when the term "rice" starts coming out :)
