It's been a while since I posted new pics so here you go guys. First Jordan (racin4jc) and I built this box a few months ago. Next the motor toasted in june, keyway sheared off the crank gear and got out of time causing the pistons to kiss the valves. During that rebuild I got a 10,000 mile short block in it and a stage 2 NA cam from Ben at WOT Tech along with better valve springs and pushrods. Specs are 205.2/205.4 @ .050 duration, 264.6/264.6 @ .006 duration, .533/.533 lift. 110 LSA. Finally I bought some new rims from a member of 60*V6 but got screwed over. They are RSL Ikari wheels with Nitto Neo Gen tires in 215/35/18. He claimed everything was in great shape but when I got them one was dented, the other has a tire with 3/10ths of tread left and they all are flaking the coating. I lost the paypal dispute so I am stuck with them. It looks decent from 5 feet or more away but up close they are pretty dissappointing. Here are the pics, let me know what you guys think.

Red, that sub box is cool! is it just me or does it look unfinished on the second pic?

Vin the unfinished looking part is on the edge of the trunk where the carpet pulled up a little. The wires still need to be hidden since I have been playing with it the past few days. Ion you can't have the wheels, but you can be jealous more, it makes me feel a little better since I got fucked on the deal. Anyone know a place that repairs dents? The only issue I have is that the tires are too small and make the fender gaps look monstrous.

Damnit... I'd have them powdercoated gunmetal.. heheh.. wish they weren't discontinued or something, they're damn rare apparently, I can find none besides ONE set on eBay in white lol. For 4 lug ricers.

alerored04
07-09-2008, 08:38 PM
Well dont be too jealous cause I paid $700 for 4 wheels with flaking pcoat, one with a bald tire and one with a dent. Still want them? Ill sell em for $600 lol. Yalero the sub sounds pretty good. It could use some more volume but I think it is pretty good for a first time ever experience with glass and box building at the same time.

Found pics of the damage to the pistons and of my shortblock before installation. The damage to the piston was minor and it all could have been reused but that is not the way I do things. The exhaust valves were all bent but I got a sweet deal from Germ on a full set of SI stainless valves for $200 and I got the shortblock from him for $250 and he threw the engine stand in for $50 and he taught me how to swap a cam for free. Now instead of a 3400 with 130,000 on it I have a short block with 10,000, freshly inspected heads with new valves, springs and pushrods. Its a nice feeling knowing I did all of it on my own, minus the head work.

Actually yeah in about 1.5 months I'll take em. Hehe..

In that time frame I might do that. You do realize that the one rim is dented pretty badly and one tire needs to be replaced? The only issue I see coming is that the tires on my stock rims are shot, so worn that they will not hold air so I would literally need money enough ahead of time to put tires on those before I could remove these. If that all sounds good then let me know when you got the cash. Honestly though I feel rather criminal selling these for that price the pictures do not do them justice, they are very ugly up close.

Lemme see the close ups and that dented rim. It's obviously not too bad if you're rolling on em. I know places around me that fix it cheap.

I found an old FS post on a Mitsubishi forum for those exact wheels, but in silver. Three tires were good, one was bad. Guy wanted $400 OBO on all four, wheels were in perfect condition. Since there's literally no place else to buy these rims, you're all I got, and $600 is what I'll have to spend. I'm going to have them powdercoated gunmetal pretty cheaply, so the paint condition doesn't matter to me...

Next two paychecks all funds after the essentials are paid for go to my engine rebuild/install cost. Next goes to these wheels.

I am NA, I am very happy with the cam. I am right near Germ so he helped me tune, the odd thing is that our previous tune from a year or more ago was so good that we did not change anything after we installed this cam. It ran like a champ right away. THe car will outrun my brother 05 GP GTP now. I have no track time or dyno numbers to help you but I have been satisfied. Ben at WOT Tech says you absolutely need to tune with the stage 2, stage 1 you can get away without be he does not reccomend it. With stage 2 you need the comp cams springs which cost around $250 from Ben, but iirc you don't have ported heads yet, you should look into those from him as well. You would see very nice gains then. Ben was guessing around a 20hp jump for me.

Beware glass, it is way more expensive than you expect it to be. I spent easily $200 probably more in materiels for that box, that includes a deal the chop mat from the engineering department at school. Other than that it was my first try at it so I would say that Jordan is a good teacher.

So, what are your next plans for the car Red?

alerored04
07-12-2008, 01:32 PM
Well first I need to get out of college debt so the car may not see much new for a while. The cam fell into my lap when the motor blew. If I can save some cash Germ has offered to sell me his turbo manifolds for cheap and is willing to help me piece together the rest of the components. Since I am pretty much out of engine mods except for a set of headers that makes the most sense. Other than that I would love to get my hands on an OSV kit but it is too late for that since I can't afford it right now. Long term once it gets a turbo and I get boost hungry and blow the trans I think I will attempt the G6 6 speed swap that was done on GAGT a while ago. BJ how did you get off that cheap? That is what stock pistons cost but you should have spent that much on gaskets to do the job, unless you swapped them out from the bottom of the engine. You did not go to a machine shop I assume?

Vinalero
07-12-2008, 02:01 PM
a 6 speed swap would be pretty sweet. I guess this is with a lot of money involved into this though.

alerored04
07-12-2008, 06:39 PM
Germ is guessing that it would take around $1600 to get the turbo kit on and running reliably at around 8 psi then once I blow the trans it would get the 6 speed which I think the total was around 3k for the guy from gagt.com.

Vinalero
07-13-2008, 12:38 PM
Is that only in parts or with labor? Or maybe you are looking to do the work yourself?

alerored04
07-13-2008, 05:55 PM
That was his parts price, he did all the labor himself just as i would. The only obstacle would be needing to learn how to weld but my dad just bought a wire feed welder and i'm sure he would teach me. I don't think a shop would do that kind of project.

[ion] C2
07-13-2008, 06:13 PM
you need to find some real shops.. any one around me would weld up the turbo manifold and exhaust no problem: Speed Industry, Auto Addictions, Street Legal Customs, Motiv Race, Monkey Wrench Racing, list goes on. Auto Addictions might build my engine, I gotta check on pricing.

But ya there's tons of places. My friend's getting his turbo kit for his IS-300 installed by Monkey Wrench.

alerored04
07-14-2008, 12:13 AM

How's it idle?
Any big difference in mileage?
How did the sound change?

alerored04
07-22-2008, 11:16 PM
It's tough for me to say, the car was down for nearly three weeks so I kind of forgot what it felt like. I am very happy with the cam, it actually idles much better than I expected it to. Germ and I had to do no tuning to get it to work since his tuning that we did years ago was so close. He did bump the idle to 900 rpm then so it is high but for me that is normal. I have not had a chance to measure milage yet but it seems pretty normal with the exception of my new lead foot cause I like to feel it pull at 4k rpm causing worse mileage. Sounds pretty much the same as before but my exhaust seems to have a tad less rasp at the higher rpms.

Quick update for you all. Couple weeks ago one of my front brake calipers siezed so rather than fix it with stock parts I upgraded to the Vette calipers and Impala rotors. While the car was down waiting for parts I had my wheels powdercoated gunmetal, you can see the shape of them at the start of this thread and read the story of how I got screwed. I like them alot more now. The braking power is so good. I have not had a chance to really test them cause I am still breaking in the pads but they can make your eyes feel like they are bulging out of your head when you step on them hard. A few notes on the brake swap: I checked my stock GLS wheels with these brakes and they fit, barely but they clear the calipers. Aside from that one trick I read on GAGT is to make sure to mount the calipers with the bleeder screw facing up so it is easier to remove the air from the system. For those of you who are going to do this but want drilled and slotted rotors, I could only order my Impala rotors off ebay in a set of 4, I got them cheap so I did not care, The rears looked close to mine so I tried them, they fit great, so if you are doing this you can buy a set of 4 00 Impala rotors and use all of them.

I never knew if the 16s would fit. That was the biggest question I was asked and never knew the answer to because my car originally had 15s.

The bleeder screws should always be up. If they aren't, you have right and left reversed.

Oh, and your rotors are on backwards.

Lastly, the Impala and the Alero use the exact same rear rotors.

[ion] C2
08-25-2008, 09:46 AM
Oh, and your rotors are on backwards.
Nope, as long as the internal vanes are straight (we can't tell from those pictures), they are on properly, as the gases/water/air is evacuated to the outer of the rotors as it spins. Had they been rotated the other way, everything would be pushed toward the center. The difference may be minimal, but it's more important about the internal vanes, you want them angled the same way as the outer slotting is shown in his picture, that way it acts as a centrifugal pump and pushes air outward rather than toward the hub.

Cliff8928

Ya it is. They don't have pictures up in their FAQ but that's how you install them according to every other performance brake manufacturer, and this:

Cliff8928

Uhh, that picture is agreeing with what I said. Maybe you need to look at both pictures again.

[ion] C2
08-26-2008, 11:56 AM
Yeah the first picture looks like it agrees with you on your "only one way" of doing the external slots, but if you read:
the direction of the slots is totally up to you and what you think looks best. In this case, there is no wrong answer.

Since the internal vanes are straight, it doesn't matter. It's totally dependant on the internal vanes and their angle, you want it to pump air outward. If the vanes are straight, I'd rather have the external slots/holes angled so that it pushes gases/water outward.

Cliff8928
08-26-2008, 11:59 AM
Man, I was supposed to *read* and not just look at the pictures???

I never paid attention to if the vanes are curved in the baer rotors. All I know is that they're labelled left and right.
