I was wondering who has this done and if anyone did it themselves so that I could have a heads up if I wanted to try and do it. I wanted to know what parts are involved, I know somewhat of what I would need and am good with wiring, help me out guys.

well first thing you'll need either a remote starter kit.. or an alarm/convience package that supports remote start
Second you would prolly want a wireing diagram... for the alero... something that if you get i would like a copy of.. cus i havent been able to find one...
Thirdly basic tools n stuff...
the install cant be that hard... the kits usually come with a wireing diagram for the product and they list what wires on the car need to be accessed...

I've got a remote start as part of my alarm but I didnt do the install. Not familiar enough with cars and car electronics to attempt it.
If I remember right there is an additional module that you need to buy for the Alero to bypass the passlock (I think thats what its called). Without the module the remote start wont work. I think there was a post a while back about this that listed the part name for the bypass.
If not I'll check when I get home, I think have the part info with my alarm stuff.

I had the Bulldog remote starter on an old car, worked great, no probs and there website had all the wriring diagrams, or u can use the test light it comes with and find the wires the hard way like i did on my old honda, lots o fun. Good kit, also works the power locks and trunk if you wire those in too

You definitely need a Passlock module for GM cars that have keyless entry. If it is a manual transmision you will have to unhook the wire that locks you key in the ignition. Then you will have to remove the central panel so that you can get behind the ignition. Once you have acces to these you have to hook few wires in there, the rest has to go to the fuse panel on the driver side and one wire is hooked up in the engine bay to the electronic distributor(I think that what it is). This is the install for a ecotec engine with manual transmision. I know the guys who were installing it and they had a tough time. I have the compustar with starter, alarm and pager. It was working fine for about 2 years and now my fueses for the compstar are melting. I keep putting in stronger and stronger fusses but I will reach the limit soon. I am at 40 ams now and when you touch the fuse it is pretty warm. Not a good sign, something has gone bad. I guess my suggestion would be let someone who really knows this stuff install it for you. If you still decide to do it yourself there was few posts here and on the Grand Am forum on how to do it. They had pictures, and diagrams and the whole works.

What year of a vehicle do you have. Not all of the alero's have the passlock installed. I have the 2003 GLS with remote door locks. It does not have passlock on the car. This was one requirement for me when purchasing the vehicle. I had owned a 97 grand am and my sister had a 97 or 98 malibu with the passlock. On both cars the ingnition went bad around sixty thousand miles. Unfortunately, with the passlock you have to replace your door locks as well. That was about four hundred dollars I do not want to pay again. In the manual it states that when you turn on the car passlock will light up on the dash if equiped. You might check or call GM and give them your vin number. I have been curious about the remote start for a while. Our winters get pretty cold and I work third shift so it would come in very handy. Let us know how it turns out and how difficult it was. Thanks and good luck.

You will have to tap into the "tach" wire. I had it until it started turning my car off while I was driving it. Not a good thing.
I did love it though, esp in the winter

I think all Alero's have passlock. I have a 03 GX and it has it. The dash light won't say passlock, but it will light up Security when you turn your car on if you do indeed have passlock. Give it a check.

i have a 99 Alero GL and it has Passlock II, so yes you will need a bypass module for the rem. start

positive, the key will not have a resister or "chip" in it but it has something in the ignition of the car, the Key when turned emits some sort of "R-Code" and this sends a signal to the computer. If when you turn the key, on the insturment panel of the dash, a SECURITY light comes on the then shuts off it has it. All aleros have this.

I'm getting my remote start / alarm installed this week, now, I have a 99 GLS, and they want to charge me $60 for that module thing. Am I getting ripped off or what?

I think that you are right that the alero's should have the passlock. The 2004 web page lists it under standard options. However, mine may not be working. I do not have security or a passlock light that lights on my dash. I did have to have my ignition changed a month after I bought the car. The curious thing is that I asked if they needed both of my keys for to be recoded to the ignition. I was told that they did not need them for my car. I know that the old systems had to code the key. Does anyone know how the newer system works?

I'm glad I found this thread. I've got a 01 Alero GX and it's a 5 speed. Is there anyone on here with a manual transmission that has installed or had a remote starter installed on their car? I had one on my Camero and it came in handy so much during the hot summers and cold winters. I was just wondering if it was possible to put this on my Alero because you have to put the car in reverse in order to start it and to get the key out. Sorry if my question sounds, or is stupid but keep in mind, I don't know much about this stuff and the only way to learn is it ask. :)

Refrance the Manual.. i have one too... and if you pull out the trim for the shifter... you can see the cable that keeps it locked into reverse... when the key is out.. you can just unhook that and keep it tyght... but just remember to put ure e-brake on... that feature seems to be there on our cars for 2 reasons.. cus the e-brakes suck... and cus there is NO ignition lock on our cars... (anti theft)

thanks, um yeah, i can attest to the e-brakes being a little poopty. i went to my brothers house on sunday and pulled up in the driveway, which is a decent little hill. i pulled the e-brake all the way up, let my foot off the brake and the car rolled about 8 feet back. my stupid ass was trying to make sure i had the e-brake pulled all the way instead of slamming on the brakes... no i'm not blonde either... ;) :D

lol last post was funny.........but anyway.....im really good with wiring, wiring diagrams, and all this stuff, with a degree in electronics i better be right? now as far as the passlock works where does that go, I am looking at the wiring diagram on the haynes manual(for referance if anyone has it)...the wiring going into the key switch is red, then coming out its yellow, after it goes through the gears to make sure it only starts in park or neutral it turns into purple which then goes to the starter solenoid, my question is where inline does the passlock go, if not inline which wire should I tap into?

Take your car to Firestone, they will tighten up the e-brake for $15. I had that done to my car when I got an alignment done. And boy, is it ever tight. Pull that sucker back 2 clicks and the back wheels LOCK up.

Thx. I need to get my tires rotated anyway so I'll have them do that also.

for those of us who prefer to maintain our own cars, does anyone know the procedure to tighten up the e-brake on our own? the haynes basically says that the e-brake runs off the rear pads, and the rear pads must be bad. which i know isn't true.

hey nerd, yes you can tighten up your e-brake yourself.. all you have to do it take off the back tire and there is a little hole that you need to take a flathead screw driver and push the little notch down i think...

the new system uses a tumbler based code.
If the key doesnt flip the tumbler at the right millisecond, the BCM doesn't recieve the correct signal it will cut off the fuel supply to the engine after a few seconds.

YEP, THE NEW SYSTEM USES A TUMBLER BASED SIGNAL CALLED AN R-CODE. THE R-CODE IS GENERATED BY THE KEY TURNING THE TUMBLERS AT THE EXACT MILLLI-SECOND. IF THE KEY DOESN'T TURN THE TUMBLERS AT THE RIGHT TIME THE CAR WILL START AND THEN DIE, DUE TO THE SYSTEM CUTTING OFF THE FUEL SUPPLY. IF THIS HAPPENS MORE THAN 3 TIMES IN A ROW IN 10 MIN. YOU HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER 15 MINS BEFORE YOU CAN TURN ON THE CAR, EVEN WITH THE KEY.
