im looking for a smooth riding tire. im assuming u cant have performance and smooth ride tire but if so whats the best. i hate tires that create road noise to i have some goodyears that handle amazing but they sure do make alot of road noise.

I have some GoodYear Viva II's from Wal-Mart. They cost me about $75 each back in October '07. Best tires for the price, and they handle real nice. I put them on my Alero just to test them out yesterday and they definitely make a diff.

According to the tire survey results on tirerack.com:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=GTAS&width=215%2F&ratio=60&diameter=15&tireSearch=true&autoMake=Oldsmobile&autoYear=2004&autoModel=Alero%20Sedan&autoModClar=&minSpeedRating=S&speed_rating=S&speed_rating=T&speed_rating=U&speed_rating=H&speed_rating=V&speed_rating=Z&speed_rating=W&speed_rating=Y&speed_rating=(Y)
1. Bridgestone Turanza Serenity (might not be available in your size tho)
2. Michelin Primacy MXV4 $109
3. General Altimax HP $63
I just bought the last ones a couple weeks ago, and I cannot hear them at all. I also have them pumped up to 52 psi for fuel economy (max is 51) and the ride is still very good.

Maybe the tires on your car now are not oem size. If you have stock rims on your car, its one of these two depending on whether you have 15 inch rims or 16 inch rims:
Original Equipment Size 1: 215/60-15
Original Equipment Size 2: 225/50-16

thats what tire rack says my car has 205 i know someone had them replaced maybe thats y the car isnt the smoothest quietest ride? so its safe to put the 215s on i have 15 inch rims.

Yeah, tire stores will sell you anything that they can jam onto your rims, alot of them don't care if its the right size or not as long as they can make the sale.
215 60 15 is the correct size that came from the factory. Putting different sizes on can definately affect the way the car drives in quite a few ways.

i have Pirelli P6's they're awesomely smooth on the road and they have great traction and overall performance for as fast and crazy as I dare to drive in the alero.

whats the 205 for again i forgot is it the width from left to right and the 65 is the height of the tire? damn maybe i should get the right size put on and see if it helps i thought my car didnt have a smooth of a ride as i remember aleros having.

205 is the treadwidth in mm, 65 is the height as a % of the treadwidth, 205mm x .65 = 133.25 mm tire height. Thats only about a 3% difference in height from stock tire, so the height difference alone is not likely to cause a perceptible difference in ride quality.
Its really a combination of factors, and when GM designed the car to have a certain size tire on the stock rim they put on there, then thats the tire size you should be using. Not to mention goodyears are overpriced crap tires for the money, you can almost always find a better tire for less money too.

Don't buy new tires unless you need them, but when you do you should go back to the correct size.

Mine was originally 205/65-15. But that was a mid-year change for the '04 models.

I've got a set of those on my car right now.. and let me tell you somethin' .. if you're lookin to win a burnout contest.. look no further than the Goodyear Viva II. strap two new viva II's to the front wheels and just give it pure hell.
they SUCK as far as handling goes.. I can take a corner doing 15 MPH and the tires will squeal. Good wet traction and water evacuation.. this is definately a tire to get if you are looking for ride quality. if you're looking for a performance tire (aside from burnouts) .. do not get Viva II's

Actually, when I get my tires nice and hot, they handle pretty well. Probably not as good as the high end racing tires, but I can take some mean corners at decent speeds. I don't drive like a madman, at least not all the time. I've got a 4 month old son to worry about.
