There seesm to be 2 diferent Schosche kits for my car (1999 Alero). I am having trouble deciding why I would want to pick one over the other:

Scosche GM1583B:

Scosche GMT2409B:

http://www.clarityelectronics.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/GMT2049B.jpg

The pricing of the 2409B is more (not by much) and appears ot have more parts. But I'm having trouble understanding why. It's refered to as a "multi-purpose" kit. In so far as I can tell, it also doesn't include the wiring harness or antenna adapter so I'm having trouble understanding why it even exists.

Quite frankly, I'd prefer a covered area where the pocket is, if it matters.

top one is what i have, looks best IMO. got mine free with my order from Crutchfield

And there is also the SKGMT49-4, which cost several times what the above to cost, and is even different:

It says that it holds 4 CD's, but there isn't enough info or better pics for me to get a good idea as to why it costs so much more.

How do you know that? From what I can tell, they would look the same except one has extra parts for something I can not identify.

the visual design looks different, top one's right for sure

One difference, just from the pictures is that the top oneonly seems to mount from the front where as the other two seem to mount in the back as well. That would seem to be sturdier.

The bottom one is most likely for more then one vehicle..hence why it looks like a tree with all of the extra mounting points

Mounting in the back? The instructions will tell you to cut those mounts off. We dont have mounts in the back. So the extra tabs will be useless.

I have an extra install kit. The first one you posted up; the Scosche GM1583B. I also have an antenna adapter & wiring harness. Looking for $20 shipped? (will separate for single item as well)

Let me know

Your part number is wrong for the first one. It is GM1583B. I have it sitting right here in front of me.

It does sound good, when it works.

And I'll probably take someone up on their offer on the the kit, but I have to pick out the stereo first. That and install a bunch of parts on my Escort (my Alero is my backup car). And if I'm going to buy a new one, I'm at least going to give serious consideration to getting one with HD radio.

Since a bunch of you do already have the 1583, can you give me measurements on the pockets? I'm thinking that it would be a good palce to mount a voltmeter gauge. I'm mostly interested in the height.

According to Scosche it does, for what that's worth. I'm not sure if anyone here has one like that (run over to picks of head units thread). I'd get one if I wasn't already looking for a place to put a voltmeter.

Thanks. It's been fixed. That's what I get for using a reseller's wrong picture instead of going directly to the manufacturer's site.

The pocket measures out to about 1" height by 6 7/8" length

I vote for stock lol >_<

PS- Malix got his stereo stolen T_T...replaced with stock :P

I know I still think the stock ones look the nicest. But even with the 1" high pocket, I don't see fitting in a standard 1.5" auto gauge. I'll have to find something rectangular shaped.

Maybe something like this mounted in the pocket area:

I'm not sure if I'd want something with the stupid company name so prominent though.

Or maybe something like this if it happens to fit.

I'm also thinking that without the pocket, there is more room there for the wiring as well. Seeing how there isn't much depth there.

No matter what kit you buy.. you still need to cut out the pocket if u want to put gauges there.

Yeah, but is there a nice way to cut out the pocket and cover it up before I mount something on it?

If all the Scosche stuf has a pocket or the CD thingy, how come a few of the pics in the single din section don't have the pocket?

I'm referring to some of the pics in this thread:
http://www.aleromod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22280

That do not show a pocket:

Then I'l get the Metra instead. JC Whitney and eBay seem to have it.

OK, but now there are two Metro kits!

ZX292829
http://www.jcwhitney.com/wcsstore/jcwhitney/images/imagecache/I_292829_CL_1.jpg

So what's the difference? And neither appears to have a plate instead of the pocket.

zzyzzx
09-04-2008, 01:26 PM
OK, JC Whitney's webpage is wrong. Even meteronline's webpage has what looks like the wrong pictue until you look at the PDF instructions. The one without the pocket is Metra 99-2001 and the plate is really the "Equalizer Dummy Plate"

yeah I got the metra kit and wiring harness for 23 dollars :p I like it, the pocket would be nice but I'd rather mount switches on the 1/2 din slot that has nothing, or digital gauges. hmmm
