You're going to hear every brand made besides BOSCH. It's preference.

I use NGK.

Stick with the Delco Platinum, NGK Platinum, or NGK Iridiums

are spark plugs a performance mod? what do they do/what are the advantages of aftermarket plugs?

^Yes and no. A better spark plug will help fully combust the fuel more and will probably last longer, but you're not going to feel any kind of power gain from only spark plugs unless your plugs needed to be changed 5 years ago. When you start getting into some serious power levels and high compression/boost is when you'll really have to worry about what kind of plugs to get, heat range, gap, etc.

The car would benefit more from a high power ignition system, like an individual coil on plug CDI.
