I want to paint the black plastic peices around the center console and shift lever. how would I go about removing these for paint?

a flat head screw driver or butter knife. but dont do it. youll regret it when it peels and looks like shit.

pry them of they pop right out. but you'll have to take off the shift lever handle to get that bottom piece off

If you prep it good and use the right paint it won't peel...

From what I hear, duplicolor is good for that, but I have never used it myself.

give then all a very fine sanding... so give the paint some grooves to stick into.

and last time i heard, krylon fusion for plastics is the best.

the gear selctor piece remove the shift knob, put the car in gear and look in front of the knob, you will see a small opneing get a small screw driver and remove the clip
the piece its self just pops off, and the radio bezel your talking about right does the same, i would use trim removing tools, not the metal kind but there is a set i have that is made of plastic so you wont damage the trim pieces

iam sorry but i would never use a rattle can to paint a interior, ppg and others have interior paint, and you cann use base coat and clear, all you have to do is switch it over to the interior system
this is how you do it, wipe it with dx330, its a wax and grease remover, then scuff it with a red scuff pad, wipe it again with 330, then paint, no need for adheshion promoter at all
thats it real simple

know an approximate cost for the paint you recommend?

and i know you said no rattle can... so he'd have to take it to a paint shop? (i'm guessing that 98% of the board's members don't have pro painting equipment)

well everyone can send it to me, and i will do it, for a pint of dbc interior paint is under 100, plus the dt reducer, right there is over 100, if you want it cleared that is close to 160 for a gallon thats all ppg sells it in

then the hardner, which is 65, then my labor, at the aleromod discounted rate, which would be 45 an hour, paint time here and at the shop i work for is up to 65 an hour,

so if you or anyone else wants stuff done i would be more then happy to do it for you guys, dont worry iam not going to bend you over just to take your money, 45 an hour is cheap, small interior pieces i do them for less then 400

I would try to avoid using a screwdriver unless you really need to, should just be able to pull it out. I didn't notice if anyone mentioned it but there's fairly short wires attached to every piece so you don't just want to yank it all right out. But all those disconnect pretty easy. Usually I just pull the knobs off the heating/ac stuff and unscrew that from the console instead of dealing with the wires for that.

why pait it? just send it to VC finishing and have them dip it, it may be costly, but unless you send it to bdyman, its going to looklike crud in a few months.

not neccessarily. i used the duplicolor exterior paint on mine over a year ago, and its survived 100+ degree summer heat, and a new england winter so far with no chips cracks or peeling of any kind.

Sand it and use high build primer so it's completely smoothe when you're done, then spray auto paint. Not quite bdyman quality, but it'll look good if you do it right, and won't chip as bad as rattle can hopefully.

Walmart sells spray paint for 96 cents. I would just tape off the interior parts you dont want painted, then spray it while its still in the car.

But does the rattle can look better than house paint?

No. I would suggest house paint and use a roll brush. If you want that added effect, get a textured brush. But thats only if you want it to look real custom.
