dont know if anyone has found obd for usb or not, maybe you're looking and having trouble, or maybe you've found a less expensive unit than me... let me know.

OBDII (http://www.obddiagnostics.com/order.html)

88 shipped to us, free software.

or cheaper kits to build your own.

cheaper than having a mech read/erase and error code.

hey i got mine on ebay and even though i havent had to use it yet (knock on wood) it reads the codes and then erases them.....i think it was like 35 bucks shipped or something and I just keep it in my glove box, i dont want the light to come on and its at home and then it goes off right when i pull up to the driveway...........and for the usb thing, im like 99.9% sure they make serial to usb connectors, just go to a best buy or any kind of computer electronic store.......

I carry a Cornwell handheld scanner in my trunk, and my shop just purchased the GenIsys, which is supposed to change parameters also but I'm still learning to use it, it will monitor all parameters, and we will end up purchasing the gm reprogram software later this year.

hmmm, it's funny when someone assumes you know nothing about computers...

oh well, yes, i know you can get a serial adapter, even if i didnt know that from common sense, it says right on the page from the link i posted.

and to the others, 35 is a good deal, if it works. lol i'll have to check it out.

and the whole reprogramming thing is cool, but i'd rather not mess with that right now, i was just looking into data logging via laptop/carputer...

thanks for your input nonetheless.

edit : SORRY IF THIS OFFENDS ANYONE.

what does the setup actually do? is it just a code reader/eraser or does it do more?
the reason I ask is I paid 150 for my scantool and it reads and clears codes and doesn't give much more info besides some mild monitoring.

If you download the software it will give you a demo of what it does.

yea wy3134, i did the "simulation" seems like you can monitor every value that the PCM monitors, take screen shots, and log data on a laptop.

seems like the very best option for the price, unless you want to risk something on ebay.

interesting find there....working on installing my car pc this weekend and this is the next thing i will be adding to it, so thanks for the additional option to choose from, although $180 might deter me away a bit.

The interface for those is very nice but if I had one I'd make my own program. Wouldn't know where to start though, i.e. how to get the parameters .
