How do I know if the engine in my wife's car is an Ecotec? I know it's a 2.2, but that's about it. She's got a 2002 Cavalier, but it's still the old body style. What's the VIN code for the L61? Would that tell me?

Its not an Ecotec, ecotec were introduced in cavaliers and sunfires in 2004.
the 2.2 in the 2002 cavy is the "2200" i believe.

I think you might be right Vinalero, the top of the valve cover says "2200", but I've never seen an Ecotec in person, so I wasn't sure. The Ecotec has different shaped pistons, right?

it's the LN2 2200, also known as the absolute worst engine ever to exist
the eco says "2.2L ECOTEC" on the top of the engine

Well, this leads me to a question. Her car has a 5 speed tranny, will a newer 2.2 Ecotec fit on that tranny? Would it even run with the same ECU?

Didn't the 02 LS sport get the ECO(the only model to do so) and then in 03 all models received the ECO

Isn't 2002 the first year they had the new body style? I thought they had the Eco's in them then too? Maybe it was in 2003. I remember when they first came out they had some issues, but they're great engines now. My wifes car is about to sh*t the bed, and I'm thinking about removing all of the transmission stuff. I'd like to make my Alero a 5 speed. The only thing I'll need is either a PCM from an old Cavalier, or get mine flashed to accept the new tranny.

ya because putting a Cavalier computer in an Alero will work perfectly fine...
you might want to be searching and directing your cavalier specific questions to www.j-body.org, the site all about them and far more performance oriented for the 4 cylinder L61 and LD9 than here.

first of all the ecotec appeared in 2003 into J-body but 2002 into n-body at least in canada, maybe before in the US.... You need the complete harness, new clutch and flywheel assembly, new lower right engine mounts, new pcm and the front pipe of the ecotec, I did numerous ecotec swaps into cavaliers and sunfire, on the 2000 to 2002 it's pretty easy..... but on the older ones you need the complete harness from the ecotec car + the cluster + the gaz tank with the fuel pump + the charcoal canister + the exhaust + upper and lower right engine supports + pcm + engine + tranny + the shifter and cables
I think I said all you would need to know to do a ecotec swap and of course you need to do the security light trick so that the bcm and pcm relearn their new codes on the 2000 to 2002

OMGWTFBBQ.
The ecotec was mid-year 2002 introduction in the J-Body.
Rowdy is correct, you could get a "LS Sport" with the Ecotec.

This is what it looks like:

If it doesn't look like this, it's not an Ecotec.
It started in 2002 for J and N-bodies.
It can bolt up to a transmission made for a GM 4 cylinder Ecotec engine, and that's it.

That's not drive by wire is it? It looks like there's a spot for a cable. My sister-in-laws Malibu is drive by wire and it's a 2005.

Hmm I can cleary remember the Ecotec not being disponible in the Cavaliers at the same time as the in the N-Bodies as we were discussing that on another forum at that time.
Are you guys really sure Ecotec was available in 2002???

yeah i know, but is it possible that canadian j-bodies were different? I heard there was no 2003 Z24 in the us, but we had some over here.

They may have not offered the Ecotec for 2002 in Canada. They do strange things (like 2003+ sunfire sedans)

Well I'm not really sure, but I remember discussing that with a lot of ppl in a forum and I remember seeing a post about "the Ecotec being already distributed in other models like the Alero, but available only next year in the Cavys and sunfires"
But heh, its been a while lol.
