View Full Version : Power Cable to Amp

Hey whats the best way to run it in an alero, and would it be stupid to attach the cable to that positive thing by the fuse box

StoopidAlero
02-21-2009, 02:41 PM
Just run it from the battery. I made a small x cut in my steering column boot and ran a wire hanger thru there. Find the hanger in the engine and tape the end of wire to the hanger. Then pull it thru the hole. Running it down the driver side seemed easiest

it depends on what size wire you are running? i just ran 1/0 an d had to drill a new hole in the firewall.

I figure since he only has 1 sony xplod sub, he prolly running like 4 gauge

Hey whats the best way to run it in an alero, and would it be stupid to attach the cable to that positive thing by the fuse box

Honestly man, if you think its ok to run it from the "positive fuse thing" I'd advise highly about having a professional install this. If you must do it yourself then please follow these instructions.

Make sure you lugs on it

Run it from the positive on the battery, then within 12" from the battery, have an inline fuse or circuit breaker. Run it through the firewall (drill a new hole if necessary) and put a rubber grommet around the hole so over time the wire doesnt short something. Keep the wire going on the drivers side and RCA cables on your passenger side. Run it under the back seats, and into the trunk. When grounding your amp use THE SAME GAUGE WIRE. Some people think the ground isnt important but it is just as important as the power.

And for God sakes if any of your friends tell you to run the power through your door I give you permission to bitch slap them.

I ran my 1/0 through a grommet I think the top one on the drivers side. when you push a wire hanger through it you should see it comeout by the fusebox. I used pliers and grabbed it.

Do you know what load your going to wire those subs to? What ohms are the subs and are they dual voice coil?

If its small enough 8 ga will work fine.

I've run wires through the door before :ninja:
It works OK just make sure they don't get caught in the hinge. Later on you'll be pissed though, I suggest going for running through the firewall.

You can attach to either the battery or the lug where the LARGE wire enters the UNDERHOOD fuse box.

The system in my alero was the first one i'd ever done, and installed in around 2hours... I think it's simple enough for a money to figure out.

im savier then i sound i was just wondering specifally if that positive thing there was the same as using the positive on the battery excuse me! it aint my first stereo rodeo sorry i sounded so green on the subject, 8 guage wont do it on my system its 2400watt amp 660 rms run to two 10 inch 1100watt 350 rms subs nothings hooked up in the car yet, i kept the amp and subs from my truck but left teh crappy head go with it, i need a new one before i do it

Fastest, easiest, and safest way is to just drill a new hole and put a rubber gromet in it....saves a hell of alot of time. installing an amp is the easiest thing in the world to do, but if you screw something up you could damage not only the amp, but the car's electrical system as well. If you have any doubts in your ability to safely install any equipment...seek a professional out and watch how they do it....once you see it then you shouldn't have problem afterwards. It would be very unwise to attach the main power for the amp to the positve post in the fuse block...very unwise.

As far as wiring here is an end all chart:

If you don't have to drill a new hole dont. I can take a picture of how I have my wire run if you want to see. it is really easy. flat head screwdriver to pop a hole in the grommet. metal coat hanger to tape wire to and pull through. LMK if you want pictures.

We had a guy come up to the shop with his wiring through his door jam. We give him the usual warning that it is a fire hazard and he gives us the usual "my buddy hooked this up and he has been installing for years."
So when he got in his car to leave, he closed the door, and immediately smoke started pouring from it lol. He ran inside begging for help.

You know thats extremely dangerous right?....lucky your insurance agent doesn't know.

All it will take is for something to shift and break through the insulation on the wire and short it on that hinge....then the boot catches on fire and then the car is toast...not saying that WILL happen, but it definitely CAN!

stock tweeters don't produce much at all to begin with. ignore them or upgrade.

as for speakers, pioneer prob aren't too bad if you don't play your music loud. but the 4x6 pioneers i had in my doors completely died (like, absolutely no sound) within about a year after getting them. now i am running 5.25 infinitys. well worth the upgrade, the pioneers don't even begin to compare.

The imagining isn't that bad either. They are pretty close to being on-axis with your head.

Hence the problem. The on axis response is horrible. Off axis they shine pretty decent for stock. That goes for most tweeters. For every 1 that sounds best on axis there are 20 that are better off axis.
