Mod/Admin please sticky.
If you have been following Cherry's thread we were looking into Sound Dampening.
Well it panned out, but not a group buy per say.
We are getting 20% off Sound dampening products via Elemental Designs:
www.edesignaudio.com
Simply head to their site. Buy only what you want/need. At checkout enter the code edeadba and you will get 20% off the PRODUCT. Note shipping is standard and extra.
EDIT:
Since so many people are asking and to lazy to measure for themselves Ive done the work for you. Below SQ Feet assessments are APPROXIMATES only with some extras added. If you add it all up and buy it all you may wind up with leftover- which is better than not enough! All values are single layers and have some extra added in.
Trunk Lid: 9 sq/ft
Sides of trunk (both): 14 sq/ft
Bottom of trunk: 15 sq/ft
Trunk total: 38 sq/ft
Back seat under bench seat: 10 sq/ft
Back seat sides (coupe- 2dr) 13 sq/ft
Door:
Skin (very outer most part- both): 16 sq/ft
Inner door (under neath door panel): 9 sq/ft
Total for 2 door coupe: 86 sq/ft
I advise you to consider the liquid stuff for your trunk lid. It can get between the sheet metal and the sheet metal skeleton where mat cant get. But you have to remove the trunk lid! Also I advise the use of a better mat for the door skin, under the rear seat (especially here!!!!) and the rear sides for 2 doors.

simply because you've seen alot of this stuff... have a recommendation/suggestion for what version of that stuff to use?
and you might want to post your other link that details this stuff, over here... for comparison reasons.

That link only covers the older mats, so its not 100% anymore. So its useless to post it here.
Its all a money pit really. The more you spend the less you will hear. If its not to bad get the $1 stuff, want better get the $2 stuff. want the best, get the $3.50 stuff.
Personally Im getting some of both. Im going to do the trunk with eDed45. Im doign the back seat and cabin with eDead80. A quart of the liquid stuff for the trunk lid. This will get into the sheet metal frame to sheet metal areas the mat wont!
I will try and work on some numbers for you guys tonight or tomorrow.

i'm thinking i'm getting a gallon of the liquid for the outer skin (at least) maybe i'll do the some of the trunk in that too. and regular 80 mat for the door/backseat. is the neoprene worth investing in?
i won't have time to do this till summer vaca though. so i'll be looking forward to your feedback about it.
i think the liquid will be much easier to use on the inside of the door (on the plastic)

Its not easy to put on vertical surfaces.
Im going to remove my trunk lid to do it.

Updated first post with estimates.
Some one with a 4 door can measure up the rear doors and figure the rear sides (under the back seat upright where that strange carpeted plastic bumps are).

I put in 90 Sq ft eDead45, 1 qt liquid. Shipping from Idaho to Ohio is only $20- so its reasonable...
Also note that its only a discount on MAT, not the liquid stuff!
I wont be able to buy until next week... :(
cherrington17
03-06-2009, 08:42 PM
not liquid...hmm.... that changes things (not much though)
i know the inner/outer skins need dampening, but do the inside of the doors?
and like i said before... does the neoprene closed cell foam make a big difference/where does it get mounted?

Well what are you looking for?
I wouldnt pay the price for that stupid foam crap. Just get some jute from a flooring store, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
The mat will reduce the structure noises and help with road noise. The jute will help alot with road noise. Especially under the rear seat. Its a horrible area there.

i'm looking to quiet things down alot and improve sound quality.... i'm not sure how else to phrase that(its a pretty general response).

The only noise I get is from the damn air I hear on the drive side rear. Other then that if I can get that trunk under control from rattling then I will be good.

Where do you want it?
Probably in the firewall, roof for wind noise, inner wheel well, vehicle floor seem like good spots. I would like to reduce external noise, I don't have a heavy hitting sound system that vibrates my nuts when I drive or anything like that.

i think the liquid takes a while to fully cure ( a month ), thats why I am not gettin it. it will take about 100 ft to do the whole impala ( including the floor xcept the roof). I think a gall of liquid dose 60 sq ft (depends on thickness applyed)
the impala trunk lid is 4 ft x 2.5 ft, doors are 7 ft x 2 ft , trunk sides are 2 x4, whole floor area is 11 x 4,
I am getting 100 ft of 45 mill, I will do everything but the floor, see how it sounds then decide to do floor or second layer on doors and trunk.
that should gove everyone a good idea what they need, impala is a little bigger then the alero.

110 sq ft ordered.
I allowed some extra so I can double layer under the back seat. Also in my estimate I did NOT include the package tray (where 6x9's go).
Total shipped was under $110.
I will buy the roller locally for like $6 vs there $12.50 :p

Must be nice.
Fed ex is the absolute ghey. I hate fedex. They have to be the worst shipping company ever. I dont understand why business's use them for residential shipments.
I got an email update on shipping. Fedex didnt deliver yesterday as "nobody was home". Which is a bold faced lie. The Fedex driver never went to the door.
I called last night. The customer rep said theres no reason my package shouldnt of just been dropped off... No sig required... So she said she would send a note to the driver to just leave the package in my hallway.
Today I got another email update with the same excuse.
Im not going to go to their terminal 45 minutes away to pick up my delivery. I will simply charge back on my credit card. This stuff infuriates me instantly with Fedex. ive had this same very issue with them 10 years ago, and exactly why its been 10 years since Ive dealt with Fedex. I will make it an issue to give the customer service that bit of info...

Evidently the Fed Ex driver couldnt find my place? At any rate got my package today.
I didnt get a free roller though... :(
Oh well.
My measurements were 33-38 mills. Man this is much thinner than I anticipated. Guess I should of broke out the calipers before buying.
cherrington17
03-19-2009, 08:52 PM
whats a good thickness for the job?
Ryan from Ohio
03-20-2009, 10:07 AM
In hind sight I wish i would of went for the eDead 80. Its about double the thickness. this .040" stuff makes me wonder...
cherrington17
03-20-2009, 10:24 AM
so you should use 80 for the doors?
just trying to figure out what i need before i buy.
Ryan from Ohio
03-20-2009, 10:51 AM
No, I wish I would of bought 80 for all of it.
The low end stuff is thin... Im debating keeping it or selling it off to go bigger.
need some more time to consider and collect my thoughts on this one.
cherrington17
03-20-2009, 11:31 AM
alright. so i'll go 80, when i get mine.
i don't want to have to redo it again and again.
Ryan from Ohio
03-22-2009, 12:32 PM
Well Im going to just put this stuff on.
Even if I have to double it up in some areas it comes in at the same price as the next level up anyhow.
Rollers... I went today to a locally grown big box store (only about 6 stores in total). They have an audios ection with Dynamat rollers. $12. My dad said lets look int he wall paper section. Same roller, different color handle- $5.

Np. I would rather pay for this and wait for shipping then pay for dynomat. Better be good though.
cherrington17
08-07-2010, 01:03 AM
its good stuff. dynomat is kinda cheap these days (quality, not price)
secondskin is suppose to be the shiznit, but its crazy expensive in comparison.

i had 3 layers of this stuff in my trunk, it did the job
jhubbz
01-28-2012, 12:47 PM
How does this stuff rate vs second skin? FYI I will be doing everything, trunk and cabin
Ryan from Ohio
01-29-2012, 07:46 PM
No nearly as good but way cheaper. Second Skin is a different product all together. You want the good stuff get Second Skin. If you cant afford it this stuff will work to, but not as well (the low end mat is thin).
When I did my Alero I did under the seat with two layers and everything else 1 layer. Made a HUGE difference with road noise.

The audio guy I talk to wanted to use some kid of liquid or foam that hardens on the inside of the trunk lid for me. He said it would be around $125. As a side note there sure seems to be alot of nooks and cranies on the backside of that trunk lid to use a mat type od deading anyone got pics?
Oh never mind their out of buisness.

I used the dynamat xtreme trunk kit. Ill post some pictures in an hour or so.
S8track16
04-27-2013, 08:32 AM
The dynamat trunk kit was around $100 and it comes with a wooden roller which makes it quite easy to maneuver around the edges on the lid.
http://i44.tinypic.com/1iyk5h.jpg
http://i43.tinypic.com/33o4qa1.jpg
I put two layers of the dynamat and there is a noticeable sound difference from inside and outside of the car.

http://i40.tinypic.com/15ccw3.jpg
The only major place for rattles on the trunk was this part below: I pryed the piece down slightly, just enough to put the dynamat in between, this completely stop the rattles.

Thanks for the pics and posts fellas. Sorry about the 3 year old spelling I was on my cellphone. Also the dynamat looks good on your stuff I' am very impressed. Is it a sedan? I thought my 2001 sedan had more nooks and cranies on the backside of the trunk lid than that. I only get some rattles around the top right corner of the trunk lid nearest the window. I had ratttle from my tag but took the frame off and just tightened to plate to the boddy there if ya follow me.
S8track16
04-27-2013, 02:15 PM
Ya, its a sedan. I put some dynamat on the back of the license plate as well as some foam padding, its silent.
