what does it mean if the brake pads are fully worn down on 1 pad and not on the other?

i changed my brakes today and both the outside pads were fully worn down and the inside pads were like new.

the outside pads are the ones with the little metal tab that touches the rotor when pad material is low

Do the pins that hold the caliper on slide freely in the mounts?

uhhhhh i guess? by pins do you mean the pins that can stretch out and mate to the caliper and the bracket?

Either the caliper slides are sticking or the piston's seized, one of the two.

He's right, are the brakes in question from the front or rear?

Well, pound out the slides with a bushing driver, wire wheel them if neccessary, and lube them generously with brake grease. Try installing the caliper without the disc and pulling back and forth then.. make sure it slides easily.

Also, if you try to compress it and the piston feels really hard chances are you need to take it apart and rebuild the caliper (or just replace).

Yeah, all the pins were seized on my calipers last time I did my brakes. Pull em out, clean em up, lube em good. I used a couple of those 99 cent packets of synthetic brake caliper lube they sell at the checkout in auto parts stores, its good stuff.

When I worked at AutoZone, no one wanted to spend that extra .99 for the lube. Big mistake. I've had people come back to me a couple of weeks later telling me that the brakes I sold them were crap. I had to explain that since they didn't buy the lube, their calipers siezed and destroyed the pads. Most people were just like "oh", and walked out. HAHA, I ended up selling this dude all new calipers, pads and rotors cause his were all shot. 99alerogirl - remember to sell the packets!!!! AutoZone is big on the packets.
