View Full Version : Ideas for steering wheel?

Just got a 99 Alero and I love it. It's in great shape and definitely an upgrade from what I was driving before. The only visual defect on the inside is the paint/vinyl/coating on the steering wheel is significantly worn off. This is literally the only defect I can find on the interior, so I'm sort of obsessed about fixing it.

I've looked into steering wheel covers, found one that wasn't too tacky, but even when I got it on, most of the inside of the steering wheel was visible. I think this is because there is already a stock 'cover' stitched on. Wondering what's underneath, but not so wondering that I want to cut it off to find out....

I've searched the forums and I can't find anything relevant. Does anyone have ideas as to what can be done there?

Just replace the whole front with a salvaged replacement.

Maybe you could get someone to reupholster it at an upholstry shop.

These ideas are both good, but they sound expensive and time consuming. I'm just looking for a decent, cheap, quick-fix. Like a good cover or paint or something.

Wow, those look pretty nice. These are probably the 1st steering wheel covers I actually like. By any chance, do you know if they have any gap, or do they wrap completely around the steering wheel?

If your only problem is discoloration and no tears, or significant wear, maybe theres some kind of leather pait. But it would be a real pain to mask everything off.

if you take off the stock leather, the Wheelskins cover the whole wheel perfectly with no gaps. Just make sure you stitch it correctly (ie: read and follow the directions!) so the leather doesn't warp and you don't have to do it over.

Thats pretty cool. This is something Ill probably end up doing when my steering wheel gets messed up.
