Hey guys, I'm new here, with a '00 Alero (the 3400 V6 one).
I have a problem, been buggin me for a while, since I got the car. My keys came with two remotes, one the traditional one (lock/unlock/panic/trunk) and the other with two buttons. Now the guy I got the car from said that the car has an odd factory alarm system. To lock/unlock the car I use the second remote, which unlocks the doors as well as disamrs the alarm. No if I try to unlock the doors using standard remote or try to open the trunk without disarming the car first, the alarm goes off. It wouldn't be that bad if not the fact that after disarming the alarm it arms itself automatically after approx. 30 seconds... ao there I am sitting in my car, waiting for my girl, and alarm keeps arming itself every 30 secs.. the security light lits up on the dash, and anything you touch will make the alarm go off. Theres also that annoying red LED on the steering wheel column that flashes. Now this has been driving me crazy.. I visited the previous owner (hes my dad's friend) and he said that this is a GM alarm and that nothing can be done as far as he knows.
So my question is is there anyway to get rid of that so called 'factory alarm" and just used the standard lock/unlock remote, or am I stuck with the annoying-every-30-second-alarm disarming maddness.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the car has two brains...one brain is the factory door lock unlock system, and the other is an aftermarket alarm. When you try to unlock the doors when the aftermarket alarm is armed then the alarm goes off...which it is suppose to because you are simulating someone opening your door through a window so to speak. Doesn't sound like this guy wired this correctly. The LED is there to tell you that the car is armed or unarmed..I have the same thing on my aftermarket alarm. Also could be user error..maybe you don't know the operation of it as well as you think?
