View Full Version : Simple mod that will make the interior look Better

As what i said.. I did a simple mod that made the interior look 10x better.

I have always hated the stock shifter knob.. it always felt outta place with the feel of the rest of the car and the interior... but if your lookin for a CHEAP and easy mod that will make the interior look soo much better.. check it out

Like what Redog did but on a much smaller and simpler scale... its just the resuse of GM parts in the vehicle

I pulled the shifter knob and leather boot from a 98-up Grand Prix GT and did the slight modifications to make it what it looks like now

I have one similar to that, came from a Bonneville, although I didn't switch the leather boot like you did.

yea.. the shifter knob was easy.. but to make sure the leather boot doesn't slip outta place was a pain in the ass

i do like the boot rather than stock. Did you attach the boot to the console piece? or is it just sitting in there?

Overall not bad for a cheap mod.

what do you mean sit in the rest of the car?

I'm surprised you didn't know about them. they came in the hurst.olds, W-30's and the GTO Judges from the factory. it was THE performance auto shifter of the 60's-70's.

04-30-2009, 06:13 PM
I personally think it looks badass, it kinda goes with the e-brake and its' lether boot. I think I might have to do this mod once I get to the junkyard and find the trunk piece that is missing out of my car.

exactly, this is has me thinking bout what other shifters we can use,

you can easily swap just about anything that'll fit with the U Clip

And i know of right now off hand these 3 used the Shifter Knob/Boot Combo
Pontiac Grand Am, Grand Prix, Bonneville
(Lol Quick guys what other GM cars used Shifter Boots on the Automatic's)

I don't like it per say... It's a 4 door, if I had a family I would rock that!

I don't so it's not my thing. Also it's not my thing... But think it looks great for a lot people. Definatly a great mod for 4door family cars. (imo)

O.O damn... i can't believe you noticed that todd... your a secret jew arent you !!!!

lol j/k no what happened was the button broke off for some odd reason.. and i got sick and tired of seeing the greenish bright light shine thru at night.. so i spray painted a nickle and put it there lol

Where'd you get the cleared/blue Climate control knobs?

alero_bmxer
05-01-2009, 05:37 PM
you just take the stock ones and peel the rubber sleeve off of them...its really easy

01OldsAleroGt
05-01-2009, 05:59 PM
oh man.. you found the leather wrapped knob... i had a feeling it'd look and prob feel 10x better

I pulled out that Black Plastic crap where the shifter sticks out of.. i think it looks better w/o it but to each their own... but hell it looks good man

Not sure why people like to do that. Now you have translucent light blue knobs that don't match anything whatsoever in the car. Makes the car look a lot cheaper with the rubber removed from the climate control knobs. :/

:banghead: :banghead: 01oldsalerogt: ya i left a couple of the black plastic things in because like you said the leather boot would slip out so i cut the leather and never thought about just tucking it under the PRND321 cluster :banghead:

I got my control knob covers off too..and it matches my radio...LOL...next on my list is this mod.

05-02-2009, 12:40 AM
lol .. i'll post pics on how i did it, but i actually left the largest black piece on the shifter in to hold most of the boot down.. but i'll post pics later whenever i get the chance to lol

That actually looks good.

Maybe becasue mine was a cheap red boot. Maybe I should look around for another CF one like me e-brake boot is :D

Cuz it's our car, to mod or change whatever we like.
I'm thinking about doing some interior paint, keeping the stock colored vents and door panels, but swapping them out for something else, probably white.
At least then If I go to sell the car I still have the originals and can pop them right back in.

it works fine in the Alero. But I had to do a custom Fab job to get it to work.

oldsgt... how did you get the boot to stay up, under the shifter?

i get how the bottom is mounted... just not the top.

also... does that knob button work? i've used one like that in a solstice, and i didn't quite figure out how it would push the center white piston down, in order to shift....

i'd love to have a shifter like that.
