View Full Version : ALERO A pillar

I've pondered about doing this... not sure if I'm going to or not... but I'll bring it up, so maybe someone else will (if i don't)

The project itself wouldn't be too hard, remove the passanger A pillar, stencil ALERO into it, dremel that out. Put duct tape over the word, on the outside, and heat a thin amount of plexi over the back, so it fills the ALERO lettering, and is flush. glue plexi in place, and mount a few leds on each side to illuminate the lettering.

Run wires to the pillar/leds, and connect them to any gray illumination wire. When your headlights kick on at night, you'll have a glowing A pillar, as well.

You're talking about the entire pillar, or just the foam and plastic cover?

Cherry,
It sounds like a really good idea and you know DAMN well that I would rock the hell out of it. However you have to take into effect the LAW side of it. You have red and blue, I have blue. We couldn't possibly get away with the light emmiting from the LEDs reflecting off the windshield. Unless maybe you were to do it on the side of the pillar closest to the driver and passanger.

You do it and Ill throw you some help with it. LOL

Dang Cherry,
I've been thinking about the same thing lately lol.

Do it bro. I'd love to see how it turns out.

Cherry,
There you go, a passenger and drivers side. Why not stencil out aleromod.com? That way it would be like a rolling business card for this website. LMAO
just kidding....can you mock up a photoshop drawing kinda depicting your thoughts on this?

i can't... but someone can.

someone snag ion next time hes online.

i would vote against the driver's side one.... it might be a GIANT driving distraction... something lit up, that high in the car...

PappaSmurf

Either side is going to be considered a distraction. Thatis why I suggested that you make the cut-out on the side of the a pillars, closest to the driver and passenger. That way even people with A pillar pods wopuld be able to do (or buy) this. And you know that you are doing me a set, RIGHT????? I'll pay you! ROTFLMAO

I'm totally for this as well. I'm big into effects and stuff (going more of the showcar route and such :P) and I would be all for putting that on my Alero (since my lighting is all green :D). The only big question is how would you remove the A-pillar without doing structural damage...I mean I know you're only pulling off the panel and not the actual pillar frame itself, but wouldn't that require removing the entire outer panel of the door (since the A pillar panel and door are connected)? If we can figure out an easy way to remove it I'm all for it.

The A pillar panel is plastic and pops out in about 5 seconds. It doesn't get any easier lol.

Oh, ok. My bad then. I don't have my car at my house so I couldn't go look, but if that's the case then I'm in for doing it (only thing is I don't trust myself with a dremel on that sort of a piece just yet).

My mom says that I am NOT allowed around power tools...something about my ADHD. HAHAHAHAHA

The bad part is that story was true until about 7 years ago. Now I have moved on to bigger and better things, a 28" gas powered chainsaw. vrooom vrooom. haha

i would definitely offset it, inward more. no reason to have light shining across your windshield.

I wouldn't do it!

Do it, it'll give me ideas on what I should when I find another alero

I wouldn't do it!

hence why i want a spare pillar to toy with... so when i decide its annoying to have something glowing, at eye level, on the passanger side... i can swap back to stock. ;)

its why i don't mod, interior stuff, till i have spares.

I see this getting on someones nerves fairly soon, or they would never turn it on after the initial pics. Just seems like allot of work for something that's not going to be used often.

you mean like my floor lights?

Since i installed that switch, i routinely keep it on gauges or vents. RARELY are the floors ever on. They are mostly for show....

Doesn't mean i'm not adding more to the setup later...

but...

if the leds were positioned with the tips sanded slightly and angled at a rather obtuse angle to the plexi, it should make it glow more then shine. then with some careful playing with resistors (multiple inline) you can tone down the degree of brightness, to a desired level of non-annoyance.

I'd most defintely put a kill switch on it though. Just in case.

Yeah may be ghosting the glass would cut down even more on the annoying factor!

06-29-2009, 02:25 PM
interesting concept... it would make it stand out a bit more during the day. maybe even light spray tint.... hmmm....

i'd hate to get it done, then have the bare metal visible behind it, during the day. Talk about ghetto mod.

That's why I said ghost it...or tinting like you mentioned might work but you would still be able to see in there when the lights come on. Im thinking ghosting the front of the plexi with the edges still clear and run the led's on the outer edge......still don't like the idea but to each his own.

i can do what you want , but the "alero" might have to be big on the trim piece for it to have any kind of detail, and for a price......

cherrington17
06-29-2009, 04:22 PM
the only time the leds would be on, it'll be too dark to see back behind it.

and if you CAN see in there, the leds should give a decent enough light to prohibit seeing much.

well there ya go guys. If anyone wants to tackle the project, you have a good idea already.... for those who don't... you have a professional willing to do it. :thumb:

btw, bdy... you guys have a lighting guy in your shop, or would that have to be added by the user, afterwards?

Wait...cherri, are you referring to the interior pillar where you typically mount boost gauges? Because I was totally referring to the outer portion of the A-pillar, so people could see it as they drive by. It's completely illegal and harder to do (because like I said, you'd have to pull off the entire exterior door panel) but damn it would be so sexy that women would orgasm there on the spot as you drove by...hell, I'd blow a load in my pants if I saw that.

cherrington17
06-29-2009, 07:47 PM
yeah... definitely interior. Exterior would be insane to pull off.

talk to bdyman if your going to do that.

Whadya say bdy? If you could get that outside door panel off for me I would totally do the rest as long as you could put it back on for me, lol.

What say you about this?

Haha, I know right? Maybe I'll junkyard a crap door just to see if I can do it with the door attached, and if I can do that then I'll totally offer out a service for that, lol.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a stock A Pillar for the driver side?
