honestly with all the work you are putting into the motor your cams seem pretty weak sauce to me......

maybe compared to stock, but overall, the numbers just seem fairly weak, I would expect something in the 500 plus range for lift.....

well the title says "turbo coupe project".. maybe this stuff is building up to hold massivee turbo boost?

ya this is going to be my dd so i didnt want an extreme cam so i found a middle ground between the secret cams and w41

i hated having the alero as a project and dd, it is so much easier when alero is just a project and if it's down i don't have to worry about getting to and from places.......

Well i think i might change my mind and go with the M62 insted of a turbo

Good luck with the manifold for the 62

Caboose73
07-08-2009, 06:48 PM
Funds are fine i was just brain storming ideas and i might go with the M62.The manifold wont be a problem and id like to have instant boost i still have to look into the max hp out put of the M62 before i got making any definite choices.Id like to here peoples thoughts on it but i dont want to hear "turbos are way better cause i like them" id like FACTS im shooting for 350-400whp with full suporting mods like meth injection,3inch exhaust,a/w h/e,stand alone, suspension & drive train upgrades.

adam337
07-08-2009, 07:20 PM
why not just get both?

kwhauck
07-08-2009, 08:15 PM
stand alone suspension? as in you don't have to hold them, don't they always stand alone...

also if you are doing a hEaton with a custom manifold why not look into different blowers? whipple i may suggest..:scpimp: so much more effecient and they thrive on high boost, think 18-25psi....

also please no matter what blower you use, try to integrate a w2a intercooler before you resort to meth injection..

also look into e85 tuning, race gas for pump gas price :yahoo:

Instant boost = instant wheel spin (ask Ion what he thinks). You'll easily hit 400whp on a fully built engine with a fast spooling turbo like a GT3071R or 3076R. I would stick with the turbo, but that's just me. More efficient, easier to intercool, more power potential, easy to turn up the boost.

Turbos are not way better cuz I like them, I like them cuz they're way better :thumb:

kwhauck
07-08-2009, 08:39 PM
i don't want to get into an arguement, but there are ways around the supercharger instant wheel spin.....

Caboose73
07-08-2009, 08:42 PM
Is the M62 as bad as the MP45 cause the M62 will be off of a cobalt and i thought that charger was alright? and there was supposed to be a , in between stand alone and suspension lol i also forgot to say id be running a cobra h/e with the M62 so there would be a w/a h/e

Spilner521
07-08-2009, 08:50 PM
i don't want to get into an arguement, but there are ways around the supercharger instant wheel spin.....
Yeah I know, but the turbo is it's own way around instant wheel spin. You don't have to do anything else besides control the boost :thumb:
Is the M62 as bad as the MP45 cause the M62 will be off of a cobalt and i thought that charger was alright?
As bad in what way?

Caboose73
07-08-2009, 09:14 PM
i know the MP45 maxes out at like 9-10psi and heats up alot.Does the M62 heat up as bad?

NickAlero2000
07-08-2009, 11:14 PM
i know the MP45 maxes out at like 9-10psi and heats up alot.Does the M62 heat up as bad?

The MP62 is intercooler capable, so it can be brought up to over 10. I know that some stage 3 cobalts running upwards of 15 with no issues.

Spilner521
07-09-2009, 06:02 PM
It can push more air and boost pressure than the M45, but yes, it'll still heat up quite a bit. There's a reason they call them hEatons...

If you're using a water-air intercooler, that will work fine. I don't think you'll get anything close to your 400whp goal out of that supercharger though.

Wanted to know everyones thoughts on Borg Warner/ Holset turbos, ive been reading about them over on j-body and other car forums and they seem to be a good turbo to use and alot cheaper then Garret turbos.

[ion] C2
07-13-2009, 09:30 PM
They're awesome. spyhunter is going to be using a nice big BorgWarner for his new setup, and many many people have had great success with the cost effectiveness of a good sized Holset or BorgWarner unit.
Instant boost = instant wheel spin (ask Ion what he thinks).
I think instant power to the ground is fine, you just need to know how to manage the throttle. It just seems to be easier to launch without spinning the wheels with a turbo.
i don't want to get into an arguement, but there are ways around the supercharger instant wheel spin.....
Like knowing how far to push the pedal.

honestly getting a loan to finish it is kind of retarded. and it doesn't matter if the king of egypt co-signs for you. On an unsecured loan, they are gonna want collateral, unless you are going to some flea-bitten half ass bank.......

Im going to be running a twin scroll turbocharger and a custom divided flange tubular turbo manifold anyone have any experience with this flange or similar products?

You'd be better off designing the manifold like Garrett says, with complimentary cylinders on each side of the divided flange.

Looks good...but I still suggest as I do to others on here..."you should have learned how to do it yourself". Learn how to rebuild it so you gain something from it and fix it yourself when something goes wrong. Now all you can say is "oh I paid someone to do it for me".

could be half and half though, maybe his motor is getting built and he understands the jist of it, but doesn't have the time or tools to do it, but he may be putting together the turbo kit himself.......

I'll admit that my bottem end is being put together at a shop, because I am not gonna chance a little clearence fuck up by me, cost me $3000 or $4000 grand, and I am also not gonna do my own heads, you bet your ass the best 60degree shop WOT-TECH will be doing my heads, but I will be assembling everything else myself, and fabbing up the supercharger setup.....

Hey Caboose nice engine. One thing I recommend is wire tucking. I neglected that issue on my engine bay so now I am resolving it. And I'll tell you the bay looks sooooooo much better. Oh and please no blue wire loom.;)

And how fast were you running it before a tune?

Valves hit the pistons or the oil pump gave out.

6 and i was going like 45ish at like 1.5-2k i was getting off the highway and it blew.I never went above 3k and the car only had 30.3 miles on it.The coolant res is empty and there is no oil on the dip stick just metal shavings.

You never revved it right? And dont lie. Also did you start it and let it idle for a while? ANd I mean just let it sit and let it run for a good while.

You are suppose to start it then stand in front of the car and just watch her per and see how she idles. Just stand there and stand then watch the gauges then stand....LOL. Look for leaks, listen to the idle, notice if the fans come on, check gauges frequently, give it some gas, etc.

I know its been told here to change the oil a few times when you first start it but honestly I only changed it once after starting it and I never had problems.

But 6 quarts is sufficient due to the modified oil pan. Now do you know for sure if a new oil pump was used? If so what pick up was used too?

Was the timing perfect on mark?

Well I'm digging this up from wayyy back I ended up getting a 04 gto with 23k on it and the poor aleros been sitting outside in my driveway for the past year being neglected. So I've decided to collect all the spare parts scattered around my garage to rebuild the alero bigger and better then before. I'll get pics of the alero as it sits now and all the random parts I have left over from the build that ended in disaster when I get back home in 2-3 weeks. But here's a few pics of the gto for now.

The idea is there, I'm serious, but I'm also broke and working odd jobs to pay bills off. Financially, I'm not ready... BUT I am willing to wait, because I want an Eco with less than 100K. 120K max, but no more. Hard to find yes? Possible? Of course?

So to conclude, I do want it, but this may be a January 2015 type thing.... unless a deal comes out of nowhere, then I'll get a personal loan or something. I'm willing to travel btw, but I'm thinking along the lines of between NY and SC.

How do you find these links nationwide though? It seems like a real hassle to go through each area on CL.

Ya im sure theres some in there  but i have the next 2 weeks off so im going to fully strip everything out and give it a good wash and try to get it running again just to see were my starting points going to be.

Well small update the 3 inch down pipe came in today I also tried getting the alero to turn over and ended up blowing a fuse and lost all power to everything so im just going to push it into the garage and start the tear down process.

Good luck fitting that downpipe with the 4-bolt to v-band adapter in the engine bay.

Also whyyyyy is your head and Cometic gasket sitting there like that, prone to being scratched up or otherwise damaged and get debris in the layers of the gasket? Aghhh..

When you install, remember this:

Head and block perfectly flat, shiny.
Copper spray the outside of the gasket (both head side and block side)
Torque to 88 ft-lb in THREE equal steps.

Ya my bad on the head i didnt think of small scratches laying it down like that and how much clearance do i need on the hot side the adapter is 3inch wide and i got the low profile 90 on the down pipe hoping it would be enough

[ion] C2
05-28-2014, 01:47 PM
It is tight, that's all I know. My downpipe does this and it's quite snug.

Hmm ya that's probably not going to fit I guess I'll have to chop off the vband parts and just bolt it to the turbo and bend it in more

Update i unpacked all the parts and laid them out on a nice soft padded surface instead of a debris covered floor like IonC2 pointed out to me :awesome: . I also cut out the exhaust and got the manifold off now the fun part of mocking up all the turbo stuff before the engine comes out :yahoo: :yahoo:. I also forgot a few goodies i picked up awhile ago like the team green lsd and a fpr adapter block

what's the FPR adapter for

Caboose73
05-30-2014, 02:45 PM
If I remember correctly it let's you use the stock rail and the an aftermarket fpr but its been years sense I bought the thing so I could be mistaken I'll try to find the thread over on j-body about it later tonight.

[ion] C2

stock FPR is sufficient, but if you want a pretty one it works i suppose

Caboose73
05-30-2014, 06:41 PM
Of course i want a pretty one lol but on another note i ran into a slight issue got the manifold in and the turbo doesnt fit   i tried clocking the cold side and not matter what it bangs into the cam tower. So ive decided to have some fun and test my fab skills and mount the turbo in a different location now im just going threw ideas now so nobody be to harsh but i think im might stick it over on the passenger side like this

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0180.jpg

The last pic is how im thinking of routing the pipe i can fit 2 1/2 inch feeding the turbo and 3 inch dp to the rest of the exhaust and theirs enough clearance to rap up the pipes so i dont go melting a bunch of stuff

Well ive been browsing on summit racing and it looks easy enough to make a log manifold and have it exit on the pass side but im not sure how to get an exhaust flange and can start off of i tried ebay and i could only find eotec ones. Im not sure if i can cut up the stock mani and use that flange or go to a maching shop and just give the the gasket and tell them to cut a 1/2inch plate.

Mini update the 4 bolt-Vband connector finally got here and some pieces of the soon to be manifold also came in the rest should be in Monday :awesome:

i might be able to have my fabricator cut a flange for you... he made one for my manifold

but yeah just give a shop the gasket and they can make it easily

How much did that cost to have him make one cause i might end up doing that im in the process of cutting up the stock one and im going to try and weld on a piece to see how well it comes out.

[ion] C2
06-04-2014, 05:08 PM
no idea, my manifold was completely designed on a trade deal, not payment
i'd guess $50-100

Caboose73
06-09-2014, 04:50 PM
Well mini update all the pieces finally came in and bam you have everything you need to make a cheap log style manifold :awesome: :awesome:
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_20140609_164224914.jpg

So now im going to chop up the stock manifold to get the flange and practice welding one of those extras 90s and if it works ill hopefully weld all up and start figuring out the final pipe routes.

Well busy night i finally got the manifold roughly fitted together to make sure it all fits and get a rough idea on the routes of the rest of the pipes to the turbo. Be genital this is my first project welding anything and this is just a starting mock up to test fitment and ideas.Well to start off i cut off the stock flange
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_20140610_165419483.jpg
Then i had to put in 3 inch spacers to clear the engine which is just 3 inch sections cut out of the stock exhaust.
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0182.jpg
All tacked in place
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0183.jpg
The rough fitment and now i got to cut them all to the same height and level it.
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0184.jpg
Then i tacked together the actual manifold pieces still need to order 2 90* bends yo finish of the end
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0185.jpg
Setting everything up to tack in place
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0186.jpg
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0188.jpg
All Tacked up
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0189.jpg
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0187.jpg
Still need to adjust the gaps and get it all fitted right
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0190.jpg
And this is how its going to fit in and the 3 inch down pipe from the turbo goes under everything
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0191.jpg
And the other 90* to make it around the side towards the turbo
http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_0193.jpg
So everything seems to fit pretty good i still need the 2 90* bends for the end. I also need to move the heater core lines and fuel lines out of the way for that side to fit but i think its coming along :awesome: :awesome:

Soooooo after reading a bunch of articles about turbo manifolds and talking to some smarter people then me I'm not going with this manifold and I'm starting over from scratch with something a lot better.

[ion] C2
06-18-2014, 07:19 AM
and have it TIG welded using stainless... no bird shit on mild steel

Caboose73

I don't have a tig unfortunately but I am going to get it ceramic coated after its all finished.

07-11-2014, 06:34 AM
Well im finally back home and got some more parts in a 12" straight pipe and a merge collector

http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu110/rmsawyer73/Forums/IMG_20140711_041623943.jpg

However after lots of messing around and trying to figure it all out ive finally figured out this is way above my welding skill (which is zero lol).So im going to put this on hold and work on my welding skills. So i went ahead and ordered a 1/2" t3 spacer which should just lift the compressor housing above the cam tower and give me enough clearance to go back to using the str log manifold. I also ordered a tial wastegate which should all be in when i get back then i can really start getting this build moving again.

[ion] C2
07-11-2014, 07:05 AM
oh yeah, i forgot, i used a spacer with the STR manifold for the turbo to fit

Caboose73
07-11-2014, 08:41 AM
Ya i know you did i did a Google search and came across your thread from here and how you made a spacer which gave me the idea lol.

07-15-2014, 05:47 PM
Well guess What just arrived today my tial wastegate!!!!! And the thing is way bigger then i expected now im just waiting for the spacer plates to come in.
